Just as Merckx was the last for Belgium. Hinault for France,
and Indurain for Spain. 5 time winners, doom their country
to obscurity after they leave. After Lance, there will be no
American champions for maybe a century. Look to eastern
europe for the future champions of the tour de france.

Look to eastern europe for the future champions of the
tour de france. So you're saying there haven't been any great Belgian
cycling champions since Merckx? Hmmmm. Yes ... Belgian
cycling has been doomed to obscurity for decades now.Sheesh!

That is so funny: predicting cycling trends decades down the
road. Might be unreliable forecasting. GaryCallistus Valerius said:

Thanks to the advances in modern genetic science, DNA
samples have been obtained from Lance. This new cellular
material has been grown in large amounts and mixed into a
refreshing orange drink especially for consumption by
bicycle racing enthusiasts. The drink is labeled ELA for “Elixir of Lance Armstrong”,
and is boldly decorated with labels of former companies that
used to support Lance. A perfect balance of electrolytes and
proteins, a must have, winning combination for the Tour De
France. Instead of Lance Armstrong just fading away, he will
continue to race with anyone who purchases ELA, only $39.99
per 3 oz bottle. You can Help. Reserve your case of ELA now!
For those that prefer an Injectable form, ELA is also
available in disposable 3cc syringes.-Organization for the Preservation of Lance Armstrong (OPLA)

Not true. I am planning a return to racing this year and
will carry the flag for America, at least in the masters
events that are close to home and do not conflict with my
other weekend activities. I am negotiating with my mailman
for a spot on the scaled-back USP team and am not yet
prepared to announce my European schedule. -- Jay Beattie. -

records in international races of the highest level prior to
the above-mentioned Tour 5-timers. Yet since, I dare say if
you look at any given race in a given year, at most one,
sometimes none, of them are able to win. Hardly a stellar
record. I think the point is proven.Dan

Did I read you right ? Maybe not, but I'll go on, anyway.
Seems that the way it works is that, for example, Freire got
first place last Saturday. But I don't recall that Zabel got
first-next, or that Julich got first-somewhere-later-on.
There was no particular prize for first Carnac-shod over the
line, just as none for first Sidi-shod.Not to mention, you could look at this year's final
placements for the races run, and you just may find a
European in there in first-winner position, although not
usually more than once per race. Don't leave out
Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, or even England (quasi-
Euro?), etc.Cheerfully, your devoted reader,

I think that like so many of the stats thrown around in pro
football, there's no logical connection between the 5-time
tour winners and any subsequent national performance.JF

The way the Australians are comming on I would expect the
