It is a kind of a exhibition. A bunch of riders is racing through
narrow streets in a small village. Mostly known as "rounding the
church"

The riders earn a lot of money, simply by starting the race and they
share the price money amongst the most popular riders who may win in a
"very exciting sprint".

In this kind of races it is not unusual to see Virenque or Voeckler
winning a sprint, before McEwen or Boonen. It just depends on whose
turn it is for that evening.

I read where Lance's asking price was 110,000 euros. Of course its a setup
for Lance and the big dogs to zip around the church for a couple of hours
and thrill the locals. It's their money so they can do whatever they want
with it. Everyone wants to see Mellow Johnny win the sprint, even if it is
just for show. I doubt that anyone who knows anything about pro-cycling
thinks that Lance can out sprint McE.

They get usually 1 % of their official annual income. I'm afraid Alain Van
Katwijk and Peter Möhlmann got less than Lance Armstrong.

There often is a real race. All the local kiddos sprint for real, after
the show finish.

i did a few of these and i got paid a couple hundred bucks a pop... i remember
feeling like a complete jackass riding around pretending to race... there were
a ton of people who PAID to get in and we werent even ridin faster than 40
kph... there were set rules as to who could what and all that.. it was
stupid... so one time i just drilled it really hard for a lap and made really
bad faces like i was dying... some of the guys thought it was funny and some of
them were really ticked because i made them pedal hard... i had to do something
to break the monotony before i would shoot myself in the head...

those post tour crits are the worst sham...

Most people read "Rough Ride" for the doping revelations but Kimmage also
writes about the arrangement and management of post-Tour criteriums. In
his telling riders juiced to ensure that the spectators got a good show.
So maybe monotony is not such an awful thing to have to deal with.

Ever race the Suisun crit? -- it is almost as short as 500m and you
get dizzy there. Turn two was like riding over ice. Talk about
soporific.
