Is that really the ideal position? His team is going to be riding at
the front for a very long time.

Remember what happened to Once when Nozal lost the golden jersey on the
second to last day in the Vuelta? The Once team was cooked and
couldn't protect Nozal in the mountains. However, Armstrong can
definitely climb with the best.

I think this first 19K tells us far more about Ullrich than Armstrong.
Vino, a non-time trial specialist did not lose all that much. We'll see if
the power loss Coyle notes that Ferrari and Armstrong had to deal with in
2004 becomes worse or better this year.

If Ullrich and "the rest of the field" are a "joke" then you should
have no problem showing them how it's done.

Well, I don't know if I'd call them a joke, but I agree with you in
principle: 50+ seconds on Vino and 1+ minute on the rest of his main rivals
has to be pretty disappointing for his competitors. However, it is only day
1, and absolutely anything can happen in the next few weeks. I expected
more from Ullrich, but it seems reasonable to think that the crash into his
team car took much more out of him than he's admitting.

far this the second time that Lance has had problems with the Shimano
SPD pedal.

switch to another pedal.

Still not, as the OPs suggest, a problem with the design or operability of
the pedal. Operator error seems more likely the case. It's just that the

LANCE is pulling out of the pedals on TT starts.

Once in the Dauphine and once in the TdF this year.

I'd call that a problem, especially if it eventually causes a crash.
