    As for Armstrong, who won here in 2002, the 32-year-old American said he had allowed Basso to win the stage because he is trying to help the Italian's mother in her fight against cancer.

    "He's a hell of a good guy," Armstrong said. "We've been friends for a long time, and off the bike we're trying to work a little bit on his mom's situation, to try and see if she can win the fight against cancer.

    "It's pretty special for me to have been out there with him, and the past week we haven't spoken about the race, we've spoken about his mom. It was a pleasure for me to let him (Basso) win, and he deserved to win. He was super strong."

    I hope Basso's mom wins as well. It's nice to see so much of the peloton supporting the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the fight against cancer.

    Doing this kind of stuff may back fire on Lance as it did with Pantani a couple of years ago.

    Eddy Mercx may not agree with Lance about this.

    I agree but I think he has a different relationship with Basso than with Pantani. I hope it doesn't come back to bite him because Basso looked incredible today.

    Anyone besides me think that there a little bit of spin in Lance's comments? I am a Lance fan, but Basso seemed really strong at the end of that race, and Lance visibly tried pulling away from him several times down the stretch. I was amazed that while Lance was dancing on the pedals, Basso seemed to be keeping up cruising on his seat and apparently expending less energy. When Basso started dancing Lance couldn't keep up. Of course I could be full of it.

    Saturday's stage should be awesome!

    Regardless of whether or not Lance chose to sprint at the end, Basso rode an incredible stage. I don't think anyone 'let' Basso win that one - he earned it.

    Okay, everyone can wake up and start watching the Tour now.

    Well Lance never showed huge explosive blast like on other mountain stages in the past but remember as Phil & company put it " it's not about the stage victory it's about time " and this was the first real mountain stage. So on that note since saturday's stage is considered much tougher will se how the master of recovery does. Time will tell
    I know one thing, he's in a hell of alot better situation today than he was a year ago or for that matter he's on pace to seperate his lead from his true rivals morer than all five of his previous tour wins.

    Lance obviously knows what he is doing. WHY spend the energy on the last 500 meters for just a stage win? He had made up HUGE time on Ullrich and Hamilton. It is best that he save that "little extra" for Saturday....

    The trick as a GC contender is to encourage strong riders with only stage win aspirations to attack and get on their wheels. If you don't rob them of the win, the next day, someone else will be your rabbit. Indurain used to play it this way. It seems that Armstrong is taking not a huge but a sizable chunk out of his competition every day. I don't think he really tried to lay down the hammer today. He is waging a war of attrition.
