I was reading a Lance interview in Outdoor Life, and said that Americans
were grotesquely fat compared to Europeans. And that he blamed it on fast
food. I can't remember the last time I ate at a fast food joint, so could
someone with fast food experience please explain what Lance is talking
about.

Fast food joints provide 3 macronutrients that, from an evolutionary
perspective, are difficult to resist.
1. fat
2. sugar
3. saltThese three ingredients are addictive (as historically, they provided energy
\ electrolytic support). Some of the best biochemists in the world are
employed by the fast food energy. There job is to calibrate the combination
of the above ingredients so as to maximize the appeal of the food.
The problem, of course, is that the nutrient density of this food is poor.
Also, the food's calories are cheap in comparison to "healthy" food
calories.Personally, there's nothing I like better after a tough race than a tasty
burger meal. Of course, most of my fellow customers had not arrived at the
restaurant with a 3000 kcal deficit from a bike race...When energy input exceeds output, then the excess is stored as fat, "for a
rainy day", which sadly never arrives...--

damaging foods - bread and butter - are also the cheapest.Yes there's no bread and butter in france and definitely was none in
America before Fast Food came out....
Fast food and a stooppid consumer based culture are to blame. Fastfood has
brought a mindset and created a culture of eating fast, eating a lot and of
serving portions that are HORS CATEGORY!Required reading: http://tinyurl.com/6o2vy

cheap to increase in size. And there is little vegetables and fiber.I don't think fast food is the whole story on the rampant obesity here
though -- it's simply that people eat too much and don't walk enough. Also, fast food in the US is rapidly changing. I've been pleasantly
surprised by the quality of food at Wendy's for example -- good salads
and decent baked potatos. Plus there are sandwich shops like Subway
in more and more places with less fat and more vegetables.JT

Fat, carbs nor protein cause one to be obese. it's caused by over eating
what ever it is you chose to eat..Ken

I think excess is the problem. Fast food once in a while, link other things are
OK.
making a diet of it, well that is the problem. -

It's NOT the fast food! The problem is the LARGE PORTIONs of food US
citizens prepare themselves ... anyone from the USA who goes to Europe
will have as their No 1 complaint: "I hate those small portions in Europe" -

the video.Good-tasting food relatively low in nutrients and high in energy,
combined with a very sedentary lifestyle. We could be getting fat
without fast food, but it would be much less if burger joints
disappeared. Someone studied modern Amish, who are much skinnier than
the rest of the population. Found out that the relatively great deal of
walking they do (just walking) was instrumental in their fitness. We
just don't walk enough.--

"We should not march into Baghdad. ... Assigning young soldiers to
a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning
them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerilla war, it
could only plunge that part of the world into ever greater
instability." George Bush Sr. in his 1998 book "A World Transformed" -
Fast food certainly doesn't help. The 'super-size' portions (or the large
portions served in a lot of resturants) just add to the problem . To compound
it further there's just too damn many folks just sitting on their lazy asses in
front of the tube channel surfing for hours on end (or video games in the case
of kids). Let's see - poor diet plus little or no excersise - sounds like the
perfect formula for fat folks to me. Here in the states (I don't know about
other countries) we've got vending machines in the schools so kids can eat junk
food any time they want and people wonder 'why ARE there so many overweight
kids????' Give me a break!JoeG <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<[email hidden]>...

That's true, but it's hard to overeat fat yet very easy to overeat carbs.
I was on low fat for many years, and it's hard not to be hungry. If I eat
pasta with low fat sauce, I'll be hungry in half an hour. On low carb,
I'm rarely hungry.--

If Lance was offered $10M to be a McD spokesman we might be hearing a
different tune. Reminds me of an advert for Bicycling magazine I received
in the mail, which was evidently sponsored by McD (maybe it was Burger
King...) Read something like, "A ride of 10 miles and you can have a Big
Mac! [i.e., they are calorically similar], 20 miles and it's a Big Mac
Cheeseburger! 30 miles, add fries and a large Coke..." and so on. Sort of
kills your enthusiasm for the magazine, IMHO... -

I would like to add this simple fact for anyone whom has run up
against the "they can't help their fat ass" crowd. In order for a person to "not be able to lose weight" they would have
to be able to break the second law of thermodynamics and/or the first
law.The second law states that "in all energy exchanges, if no energy
enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will
always be less than that of the initial state." I.E. just by existing
a human loses energy and unless they add energy to that system they
will continue to lose energy. to put it in more familiar terms. Humans
burn calories just by living, unless they take in calories they will
lose energy stores (primarily fat). The only way I know of humans
taking in energy is by the consumption of food, maybe I am not up on
the latest and greatest photosynthesis craze but.....The first law states that "Energy can be changed from one form to
another, but it cannot be created or destroyed.". I this gets a little
absurd but in the intrest of being thorough obviously by this law
humans can't create fat stores out of a nothing either. -
