  1. Lance hinted on Leno last night that he might attempt to run the NYC
    marathon.

    Weird. I know he was a tri-guy ... but ... weird.

he hints at a lot of stuff.

We all know he has what it takes physiologically, but he's got the
skeletal system of a post-menopausal woman. It wouldn't be safe.
'specially since he hasn't started training yet.

This is a bicycle orienteering event. Competitors have a highly
detailed map, typically 15000:1, compass, and they have to follow a
course. You can see the map mounted on top of their handlebars. On the
course are controls, which are the triangular orange and white flags
you see. The competitors have to find those controls in order, which
are marked on their map. Each control either has a patterned punch
for their score card, while newer systems use an electronic card.

You can see a control here:

    http://www.sames.cz/040828mcrmtbo/ipage00004.htm

It's not especially easy sport for the neophite, and home field
advantage counts for a lot if you are familar with the course area.
It's quite easy to blow 5 minutes on a control if you get lost in a
running orienteering event. He's probably done orienteering before or
he'd probably finish dead last. Either that or it was an easy
    (non-technical) course.

(can't recall the name) did the Ironman a few years ago on almost no
    training.

They would probably do squat. It's an amateur event, and he probably
paid his 5 euro or whatever registration fee less than an hour before
he started. The Spyrder's probably a loner; all I can really identify
on it are the SiD Race forks and they're the lowest end model of that
    line.

It's too bad the contest is dominated by resident photos, as otherwise
this one might even supplant my prediction for CN photo of the year....

    Issues:
    * his jersey is blank (compare to http://www.profronde-stiphout.nl/v4/img/podium2004.jpg )
    * the bike (already mentioned)
    * the socks aren't Nike
    * the helmet isn't Giro

I must admit it otherwise DOES look like him....

    yep, it was udo.
from the cyclesport article (jan 2001)

    about his training-
(after getting the ok from the ironman to enter the race) "the next step
was getting the green light from his telekom directeur sportif rudy
pevenage. "he said it was ok, but that i had to ride the tour of
rheinland-pfalz, which is in my area, from september 13-17 as my last
race in my road season. that meant i only had four weeks to get ready
for the ironman, so as you can imagine i started immediately on
    september 18." "

"two weeks into his training programme, disaster struck. bolts suffered
from inflammation of tissue round a bone in his left leg, "a typical
injury if you start running too much. and now i couldn't run at all." he
battled on regardless, fighting increasing pessimism. "i really didn't
know if i could finish, but i wanted to try. then to cap it all the
local swimming pool closed for repairs, which meant the only one
available was a 25 metre long pool. still, i went there three times a
    week, still training." "

    bits about the actual race-
after cramping during the swim and having to float for a couple of
minutes waiting for it to ease, "things went rather better when he got
on the bike. "when i started that part of the course, i was in 1,001st
place but when i finished [the bike leg] i was 41st," he says with just
    a touch of pride."

during the marathon- ""i wanted to start walking, but i knew that if i
did then i wouldn't be able to run again. so i didn't stop running, and
    i missed the feeds."

after finishing in 10 hours 2 minutes- "i was very pleased, but it was a
tremendously hard experience. my only objective was to finish in
daylight, and i did that. i didn't care if i finished last." in fact he
    finished 168th."

"doing the triathlon was an opportunity to go back and enjoy sport in a
way that it's hard for me to do in cycling- because in triathlon, nobody
    knows who i am."
