WOW.. I bought lamb shanks about a month ago and they were 3.49$ lb IIRC.
I love lamb shanks but they're not worth the prices you quoted. The last
rack of lamb I bought was 9.99$ lb.

Must be because Easter is coming. I normally get two nice meatly lamb
shanks for about $2.99/lb (it's been a while since I bought any). What's
the big deal about lamb and Easter? Come to think of it, someone else was
complaining about the price of eggs. I just saw them advertised for $1 a
dozen at Kroger on television. I'll build some coops and raise laying hens
on my patio first before I pay more than $3 for some eggs. Or, I'll just
stop eating eggs.

Yep $2.99 is the price, anything more and they can keep them.

In a word, Passover.

This year it begins at sunset on Monday April 2nd and ends at sunset on
the 9th in Israel (the 10th outside). Roasted lambs shanks is one of
the traditional dishes served at the first night Seder.

Christ died before sunset of the day the Passover began and is
symbolically the 'sacrificial lamb' for Christians. Harkening back to
the first Passover where a lamb was sacrificed on that day, its blood
spread on the lintel to save the faithful from the wrath of the angel of
death, and the lamb consumed before midnight.

The lamb CHOPS were something like $18/lb, IIRC. I told the meat guy
that at $12.50 each, I could go to the Mediterranean Cruise restaurant
in Eagan and have a lamb shank dinner for maybe $18-20 -- with some
sides.

restaurant in Eagan and have a lamb shank dinner for maybe $18-20 --

My condolences. I picked up to packages of lamb shanks this afternoon, 3
shanks in each pack. On of them was $3.75 and the other was $4.06. SiL is
coming to visit next week and my lamb shanks with caramelized onions is her
favourite dish. Lamb Shanks are a funny thing. Sometimes I do not see them
for weeks. Then I start seeing them in stores but the price can range from
a very expensive meal to a very reasonable one.

Rack of lamb is probably my favourite dish. I used to be able to pick up
two racks for $15-16. For the last year or so they have been at least
$15.00 per rack.

OUCH! That sounds just too darn pricey to be correct(?). I know prices
(for nearly anything) fluctuate with seasons and holidays. JFIS (just
for information's sake), I called a nearby Schnuck's to ask what their
price was for lamb shanks, and I was told $4.19/lb. HTH.

In a perfect world, maybe. :-) the Mediterranean Cruise serves the
most incredible garlic "stuff". Oy. Worth a visit without the cabana

Byerly's is many things. It is *never* cheap. I suspect someplace
like the Holy Land would be much cheaper for lamb (though probably
not as convenient for you).

As a rule, I never buy meat at Byerly's--just too too ridiculous.
Cheese is another thing I could never afford if I bought it there.
Luckily, there is Surdyk's.

Woo hooo! Another Syrdyk's fan! We might do the Stone Arch art festival
this year and a trip to Syrdyk's for wine & cheese is definitely on the menu
(so to speak) if we do! As it is we'll be going to Edina in June and eating
breakfast at least once at Jensen's Cafe in Burnsville.

Hi, Mike. I'll be going to Kramarczuk's this week and may see what
they've got. And since I'll be going that far NE I may as well see my
sister for a cuppa and hit Holy Land on Central and then Ready Meats on
36th & Johnson. It's an honest-to-god butcher shop. They still cut
meat and they don't shoot it up with salt water. Never even gave half a
thought to Holy Land. Thank you for the suggestion.

I don't usually shop at Byerly's but there've been more than two times
when I HAVE gotten excellent prices on some meats -- pork tenderloins
last Nov-Dec come to mind. I do think their deli is vastly overrated,
though. :-)
