And the first part of the forecast that I saw seemed to be some
nannying about dogs. I'm surprised they haven't got stuff about health
too!

Exaggeration has no place in weather forecasting. What's needed is
accuracy, not warnings about the worst scenario. And they should leave
out the advice - we can make our own minds up about what equipment we
carry. I don't check the forecast to be told to wrap up well or wear a
woolly pully. They are all, imo, a waste of money. They should be paid
by results!

Most of the small patches I saw were on the northern sides, too. You'd be
really unlucky to run into an unavoidable patch of ice or snow requiring an
ice axe or crampons to get across.

We carried them around the weekend before searching for something
climbable without success - and it's thawed a lot since then!

I don't mind being given advice about conditions, but if it's
exaggerated then it's worthless. Many years ago, when the National
Park still ran ice axe courses, I was out with one of the rangers on
the ridge near Brown Cove. It was snowing with a moderate breeze,
even I as a winter novice was unconcerned. The other ranger radioed a
report from about half a mile away talking about blizzards and
white-out conditions, which were duly reported on the next day's
weatherline report. 'Our' ranger just chuckled and muttered something
about getting over-excited 🙂
