My wife is a size 6, and she bought a pair of HanWag a couple of year ago.
Gortex lined with Nubuck leather. She loves them, were comfortable from the
start, and she says they just roll along. Plenty of walking over rough
ground in The Lakes, Snowdonia, Spain and the South Downs and very comfy.

They were bought from Peglers 'Below the knee' in Arundel, but I am sure
many respectable Outdoor shops will stock them. I know George Fishers in
Keswick sells them.

I always recommend Hawkshead boots for general use. Yes I have some Scarpas
and some (old) Zamberlans but you can't beat the Hawkshead boots for comfort
and value and they are fine if they are not for bog hopping, winter use or
lots and lots of rocks. Currently £28 for ladies (size 5-7) and you can send
them back if you don't like them.

Sue has a pair of ladies Zamberlans, Nubuck leather, gortex lined, loves
them, the ladies versions are made with a ladies last so are narrower than
some.

Also, as normal, she needed a couple of sizes up on her normal shoes in
order to wear walking socks which are a lot thicker than tights. Some ladies
don't like having big feet so you may have a problem convincing her to go
for comfort over size. It's a bit late when you are out on the hill and she
is in pain.
So, as your daughter wears size 6 shoes, she may need size 7 or even 8
walking boots to be comfortable. Get her some proper socks and liner socks
first and then try the boots with those on, and stress she must be
comfortable.

Millett's? Scout Shop (or whatever they're called these
days)? I've bought boots for my children in both of these
shops in the past; to be honest I'd give Millett's a go first.

days)? I've bought boots for my children in both of these shops in
the past; to be honest I'd give Millett's a go first.

noticed that they did a ladies version, my wife is going to look at a

Just to update everyone, Last October the Scout Association sold off/closed
down the physical Outdoors (Scout) Shops to The Outdoor Group (owners of
Blacks and Milletts).
It was down to their lack of ability to compete effectively against the
large chains like Milletts (27 shops vs. 200+?), preferring to sell Scouting
material like books and badges thru volunteer run Scout County/District
shops and that uniforms can be sold in local clothing and sports shops
across the country. It also removed a degree of financial risk from the SA
in case the whole lot went bust.

Outdoors- the Scout Shops are still going as an online business.

Oi!!!!!

Us novices who are not flush with cash have an extensive collection of
"Peter Storm" gear (boots, socks, trousers, base layer, waterproof
jacket, etc)

To date it has performed admirably!

My advice is to find a really good "serious outdoor shop", somone like
tisos rather than say millets. The staff there should be well trained
and be able to offer good advice.

Your daughter will have to try the boots on before you buy them anyway,
and in my view a perfect fit (or as perfect as you can make it) is far
more important than which brand you buy. If your daughters feet have
stopped growing then just buy her the best fitting, best boots you can
find.

Obviously if her feet are still growing you may want to prioitse
cheaper alternatives.

And remember, you gets what you pays for. Buying cheap boots can be a
false economy, especially if she may start moving into more serious
hillwalking.

Boots are easy for me, I just get a Scarpa in 43 and job done, but
friends with narrower feet don't get on very well with them at all, so I
can't give them an unqualified recommendation... Fit is the Absolute #1
determinant of comfort, and there's more to fit than a shoe size!

(For this reason, accept /no/ substitutes for trying boots on in person
unless there is absolutely no choice)

"Yes, but..."

The "but" being Serious Boots can be completely over the top to the
extent of being /unhelpful/ on many occasions. Last couple of trips out
have been on snow and I've been happy to be wearing my stiff crampon
compatible Big Winter Boots, but I'd /never/ wear them to do the same
routes outside of winter: heavier, clumsier and more fatiguing than many
lighter options, down to and including sandals.

Only buy expensive boots if they will be a direct benefit for the job in
hand, and if the job in hand is as yet largely unspecified then it's
silly IMHO to spend huge wodges of cash. One boot does not do
everything well, no matter how much you pay for it.

But my other point (I did make) was that, if you are unsatisfied with them
you can send them back for a full refund, so this fulfils your requirement
(or better, as you do the trying on at home). I believe with the right
socks, and because they are softer boots, the last sizing is not so
important as it is with, say, Scarpas. All the family over several years
have had Hawkshead boots and been very happy with them. As I said, I have
some Scarpas as well which I spent a long time in a shop with a slope trying
on as they would have been murderous if wrongly sized.

£28 (now in sale), try them on at home and full refund! What do you want,
blood? :o)

Up to a point. I can get a pair at home and try them on and think
"these are okay", but unless I can compare /right then and there/ with
some alternatives I won't know if they fit me really, really well or
merely acceptably.

But socks won't change the relative dimensions of different bits of your
feet! I find Teva sandals fit me better than Merrels, and you can't get
much softer than sandals where the upper is largely non-existent, but
it's easy for me to tell the Merrels are narrower than the Tevas and as
a result not so good for me. But I can wear Merrels without any active
discomfort.
