ssl's are going to the girlfriend. i am looking to upgrade a little.

Seriously, I think unless you're close to winning a major competition I don't think it's worth it to upgrade from Mavic elite ssl's, or unless you have damage on the current wheelset. The decrease in mass/better aerodynamics will have a minimal effect on your speed. The ssl is already light. Probably a easier (and less expensive) aerodynamic advantage you can get is moving to a better position, cutting your hair shorter, wearing a skinsuit etc. The biggest aero advantage you can get for the bike is moving to a full aero frame (which costs big time), the wheels only account for max 10% of total drag.

You are forgetting that there is only so much that you can decrease your drag by. If you can halve the drag from wheels (using your figure) which is entirely possible then you have 5% extra performance which is a huge difference.

With all due to respect to your chick, keep your SSLs and get the babe something good without breaking the bank. I've had the Ksyriums for over a year and I just can't see spending another dollar on any set of wheels. They're strong, light and look cool as hell.

I have a set of SSL's (2004). They're nice, but a bit stiff for me. Also, in breezy conditions, you can feel the resistance against the flat spokes, which are quite wide (about 4mm?).

I also have wheels built with:
1. Zipp 95/220's/Sapim CX-Ray/DT Swiss R1.1
2. AC/Sapim CX-Ray/DT Swiss R1.1
3. DT 240s'/Sapim CX-Ray/DT Swiss R1.1
4. Record 04/Sapim CX-Ray/DT Swiss R1.1

I like the Zipp and the DT set the best. All are 28/32. The ride is smoother than the SSL's and I don't fight crosswinds as much with the thinner, but still aero, spokes. The rear hubs are quieter too. There is nothing wrong with the SSL's. I'm sure everyone will have a preference. Good luck.
