  1. Hi all,
I'm quite new to cycling, I've been going out twice a week and doing 20 mile ish at a time. So nothing to hard, although I do push myself hard. Last week towards the last couple of miles my left knee started to hurt, it's hard to describe but it felt about middle to back behind the cap. It was swollen which lasted a few days. The strange thing was it only hurt when I was stepping (stairs etc) I waited a week, it felt fine but I've been out again today and the same happened again towards the end.

I know this is a long shot but has anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers
    Mark

  2. Hi Mark, welcome to the forums.

Have you had a proper bike fitting?

Improper saddle height can cause knee problems as you have described.

  3. No I haven't, I had no idea that could cause these type of problems, I did follow an online post but I think I'll double check.

    Thanks
    Mark

  4. Hi Mark,
I am not a doctor or medical professional. I would suggest that you see your doctor. My wife had the same complaints you describe. It turned out that she had a meniscus tear. Hopefully this is not what you have but it is best to make sure that you dont before you continue ride. By you posting your knee problem makes me believe that you are concerned and should seek medical advice.

  5. Bike fit is so very important. Not only saddle height but how far forward or far back your knee is in relationship to your pedal.
Also, try to catch your foot position on the pedal which is difficult to do with a bike fit. If your toes are pointed out or in too much it can also cause pain.
A torn meniscus would probably "lock" up your knee and you did not describe that as part of your pain.

After you get a good bike fit, see how things are.

  6. Read this. Meniscus Tear-Symptoms
Bike fit is very important. So is your physical well being.

  7. Thanks for the replies,
I'll give you a bit more info which I maybe should have in the fist place, but I didn't want it to be to long a post.

I had a similar if not the same problem about 18 months ago (not related to cycling) I had key hole surgery because they said I was probably cartilage. When the got in there it wasn't, she flushed it out and said there was no damage inside (arthritis joint etc)

After the recovery time the problem was still there, but because of surgery I had total rest for about 6 weeks, in that time it went away. Since then it hasn't come back other that 1-2 niggles until now. I no I should have probably included this before, I just didn't want it to be crazy long.
    Cheers

  8. I also agree with that Bike fit is so very important, I suggest to you that first consult your doctor and take best advice Otherwise you can take physiotherapist sitting its really helpful for your knee problem.

  9. It seems it was my seat that was to high! I can't belive it made that much difference but the knee has been fine since setting it at the right height.

  14. Have you ever had any knee problems in the past? I have bum knees that I've never really had a doctor look at but they get sore from too much riding and swimming. Walking and hiking are fine though. Starting when I was in my pre-teens, one of my knee joints would become dislocated and I would have to pop it back in which was painful. It usually happens when I'm kneeling, they tend to want to slip and dislocate if I'm not paying attention. I've learned to live with it but I would see a doctor if it's really bothering you. -Bella Vega, Golden Rule
