  1. Anyone have experience with knee pain that comes on after about mile 7?
My training partner and I are training for a marathon and she is
struggling with this issue. It has caused her to cut short the long
weekend run. It's not horrible, yet...she had to stop at mile 12
instead of doing 13 this past week.

But is there any advice for her? She's started to weight lift (leg
extension, hamstring, and calf) once a week. Also took motrin before
the run on sunday, but will take motrin along this coming weekend to
pop around mile 7, which is when she starts noticing discomfort.

    Any thoughts?

A likely cause is knots in the muscles above/below/beside the knee. It
can take a little while for the muscles to get tired and a little dehydrated
before they start to tense up and pinch on something else in the knee. Some
people claim rolling a tennis ball can work out the knots, but I haven't
tried it. Electrical stim daily for a week knocked the problem out cold for
me, but she'll need to see a trainer or similar medical authority to
diagnose it and apply the stim treatment effectively.

Could it be her shoes? How old are they? My friend has the same
problem - pain comes on after he's been on his feet for about an
hour. His coach told him it's probably his shoes. He's had them
    for a few months now.

Best to address this issue before it indeed becomes horrible.
Motrin is only a temporary measure. She could end up doing
    permanent damage to the knee.

Good luck in finding the problem.

    yeah. fix your sig. please.
also, forget about any of the replies until you post a
bit of a description of WHERE she is feeling the pain.
Top, bottom, inside, outside, on foot strike, all-the-time?
old shoes? new shoes? running experience?
    you know. info.

  6. She got new shoes not too long ago bc we thought that could be the
issue. She did the wet test to see what type of shoe she needed, etc
(from runner's world). So not sure that's the issue.

You might want to describe the knee discomfort better. Outer edge could
be ITB, inner could be something else, could be runner's knee, etc.

The wet foot test tells you what kind of arch you have. This may or may
not be related to the kind of shoe she needs. For example, they
generally recommend motion control shoes for people with high arches.
However, some of us have high arches and late pronation where stability
shoes are *far* more appropriate. Fortunately, my PT diagnosed the cause
of my AT problem the 2nd time round and recommended stability shoes
rather than mc that I'd been wearing (fitted by running shoe store). Her
    MMV.

You haven't provided much background. Did she do a gradual buildup to
present mileage? or was there a jump in there? For me, knee pain is
usually an indicator that I did too much or was inadequately recovered
from recent training. If she's lifting also, that can add more stress
that she may not be recovering from.

Masking pain (via motrin or whatever) is generally not a good idea for
long-term results. She should really try to find the cause and fix that.

    Just my $.02.

  8. The knee pain might be due to a muscle tear, if that's the case then lifting
weights could aggravate the problem. Best to have it checked out by a
physiotherapist just to be safe. My suggestion if that when you start to
feel any pain that is hampering your run then STOP RUNNING and call it a
    day!

I solved my more serious knee problems by switching to stability shoes with
good arch support. Later I also tried glucosamine+fish oil capsules. After
4-5 weeks they completely cleared up a chronic niggle that I had had for
many months. Now I take a 500mg capsule daily to help keep my cartilage and
joints in good shape. If I have any pain that persists more than 3 days even
with rest and icing then I go see my physiotherapist.

  9. Dude run 6 miles and lift weights. derrrrrrrrrrrrrrr slow and light
    and build up........
or menta here and run your self into the ground.
    2nd groupie.......still losted......

  10. Unfortunately I don't know exactly where the pain is. She did build up
slowly with the running and weightlifting. It's not like she's brand
new to it all. It's just that once she hits the longer mileage, the
knee pain appears. she can easily run 6 miles or so with no issues.

We're planning to go to a running store this weekend that does the foot
evaluation stuff. Hopefully that helps...most of you seemed to think
shoes could definitely be the issue, so hopefully that's it. Nice,
    easy solution!

Thanks for the responses..it's been useful.
