  1. So I've got a torn meniscus which is the result of a poorly done bike fitting and knee instability. I have taken the measures necessary to fix the bike issues and much of the knee issues, however I still need to wear a brace for patella tracking when I ride. The brace my doctor gave me is a patellar strap made by MedSpec. This brace really irritates the ligaments behind my knee with the pressure and the rear velcro closure; it also slips as even though its neoprene with a synthetic leather pad under the patellar area.

Is there a brace for patellar tracking and medial pain issues that is good for cyclists?

I will be taping tomorrow, but taping is not practical when riding many days of the week, plus running on any off day.

  2. Somewhat off topic, but I have heard that the Mayo clinic recognizes prolotherapy now. It may have something to offer your situation.

  3. I had both meniscus torn and folded and a torn acl. I started riding about 16 days after the surgery and have progressed pretty well but I don't use a brace. I also don't run which I think would irritate my knee. I did do some therapy and various exercises to strenghten my leg. I am 7 weeks out from surgery and expect to do a steep 50 km ride this weekend.
Did you have this repaired or are you just waiting for it to heal?
Again I would avoid running until you get the muscles built up and the stability back.

  4. From Wiki, for better or for worse:
As of April 2005, doctors at the Mayo Clinic began supporting prolotherapy. Robert D. Sheeler, MD (Medical Editor, Mayo Clinic Health letter) first learned of prolotherapy through C. Everett Koop’s interest in the treatment. Mayo Clinic doctors list the areas that are most likely to benefit from prolotherapy treatment: ankles, knees, elbows, and sacroiliac joint in the low back. They report that "unlike corticosteroid injections — which may provide temporary relief — prolotherapy involves improving the injected tissue by stimulating tissue growth."[6]

  5. You need to have the tracking issue addressed with treatment and taping (I have found kinesio tape works best and will last for 3 days)

Did you ever find a good knee brace for cycling? I had been experiencing knee pain that was totally fixed by wearing an open patellar knee brace, but just like you it irritates the ligaments behind the knee. It seems like knee braces are designed for other sports where you do not bend your knee as far as you do in cycling. The material bunches up behind the knee when you do, causing the problem.

I agree with you . I tried also but I felt irritation and can't enjoyed with it .

  8. I got the following in a private message from another forum member about the issue:

hi. I did end up finding a brace that helped some. i can't for the life of me find the exact one, which is made by Otto Bock, but here is one that is very similar. DeRoyal Concise Patella Stabilizer Brace Support

I was able to relieve some pain by using the strapping and c-pad to lift my patella off the area that hurt. why it actually relieved some of the pain from a meniscus tear i have no idea, but it did help.

it does not, however irritate the back of your knee and it will mimick patellar taping very well.

    hope you find this helpful!

I'm currently working on strengthening my vastus medialis muscle (here's some info about that Vastus Medialis Muscle | LIVESTRONG.COM).

  9. Hi

An old thread, but i found it on a google search
I too suffer from patella mal tracking, and have had great success with a Mc David 421 - actually the standard one is 4mm thick (way too thick) they made me a special one (red inside) and is much thinner
I can get away with 30km rides, but not much more as it rubs the back of my legs and gets sore

I've been looking for another one and have found the Don Joy Tru-Pull Advanced Knee-Brace
It has an optional cut out in the rear which sounds just what I need

I'm wondering how you got on, and what you got in the end?
