Powergrips? Or would she do better with grippier flat pedals? The cast
alloy ones with steel studs feel a lot more secure to me than lesser
pedals.

Our U+2 (tandem trailer cycle) had child sized ones, but I have no idea
where you would find some to fit to a child's bike that didn't come with
them.

Given that they could be wearing anything from normal shoes through to
hiking boots, trainers or wellies on the tandem, I just got normal
ones. Even a 4yo can deal with them happily.

So don't worry. get what you can and it will be fine.

Seconded - my daughter used normal size S/M toeclips on the trailer bike
from the age of 4, they worked fine. It's not so much about the
efficiency as keeping the foot secure. She hasn't yet used clips since
she went solo. We'll probably start with half-clips there, as it's
easier to get the foot free in a hurry - something that's not an issue
on a tandem or trailerbike. I learnt to use toeclips and straps the hard
way (i.e. the falling-over-sideways-at-the-traffic-lights way) but then
they hadn't invented half-clips back then!

Thanks for various comments.

Looks like I'll just be finding the smallest size then and using those -
seeing as child sized ones doesn't seem to exist in the retail market,
as you say Andy, it's really just about keeping the foot secure and more
in the right place on the pedal.

we will see how it goes with the solo, as to what she prefers.

Ordered her new bike today, an Islabike Beinn 24, almost as exciting as
ordering one for myself :-)
