Don't make it an age thing. Tie it to use. If your daughter is riding
several miles or dealing with hills, gears make sense. If she's going
to the community pool at the other end of the neighborhood, it
probably doesn't.

I suppose I meant to ask, for cyclists with children, "What is the
typical age a child moves to a bike with gears and hand brakes?".

Do you guys remember when you started riding such a bike?

When mine got a flat and I had to borrow granny's 2 spd Bendix hubbed
bike. Got a derailleur bike at around age ten.

Wait at least until after the training wheels have been removed. ;-)

My sister, born in 1950, simply doesn't like derailleur gears.
In her case, age has nothing to do with it :-)

I can barely remember the hand-me-down Bendix-hubbed bike I
learned on; I got a derailleur bike at 8, and I was in deathly
fear of "stripping the gears" on it for at least a year afterwards.
I still have no idea what my Dad was talking about.

Just about anything involving kids is one of those "your mileage may vary"
sort of things, but, in general, most 6 year olds are able to adapt to hand
brakes and gears. The hand brakes are really the most-important issue, since
they don't have to actually use the gears if they have trouble with
shifting. At 6, you're talking about a bike with 20" wheels, and at 8-9 or
so, you can usually move up to 24" wheels.

I got a three speed in the third grade. I think that's about when we got a
21 speed for our girls. I needed a "geared" bike to ride to school properly
and to my piano lessons, as there were hills.
