Yes! It was my first ever competitive event on a bike.
Managed to make it to 19 minutes before being dropped from D-grade after a
[censored] gear selection on the hairpin. Still I stuck with it although I was
probably the last of the finishers.

Not too disheartened though - I'm quite glad I made it as far as I did. I'm
now a paid-up member of Hawthorn CC and I'll be back next week. Just you
    wait!

Anyone going to the St Kilda Open Crits on Sunday Morning?

    Cheers,
    Craigster (Still Buzzing!)

Sucks.. but you can only get better! :-)

Sandbaggers or is that normal speed?

Set yourself a goal: "all I have to do is stick with the bunch"
Fight like mad to hold the wheel of the guy in front. Don't
think about winning, use up all you've got just to hang on..
Well, that's what I was telling myself when I was off the
back a few times at the start of the season.

    I hear that corner/hill combo is a [censored]! :-)

Open crits? Glenvale is on Sunday morning..
Actually, anyone who has been going to the Port
Melb (SKCC) crits care to comment on numbers,
etc.?? With Glenvale bursting at the seams I didn't
think there'd be anyone left elsewhere in Melbourne!! ;-)

The hardest thing I found about it was that because you aren't pedaling hard
into the corner, it's hard to judge the right gear to give you the power out
the bend and up the hill. More often than not I was finding I was coming out
the bend in too low or too high a gear.

Not been to the Port Melbourne crits yet. The ones on Sunday are at Albert
    Park (http://www.breakawayevents.com.au)

A bit on the pricey side though, esp since I'll need a day license too. I'll
go and watch since it's just round the corner.

doh! my priorities going into my first one was
    1 Dont crash
    2 Finish
    3 Dont get dropped
    2 outta 3 aint bad 🙄

I hung on till about the 20-25min mark and then stayed off the back an annoying distance about 200m). I was alone and couldnt bridge it but for the first time ever actually saw the finish! Either they are getting slower or Im getting faster. And boy, doesnt wheelsuckin make a big difference! Picked a guy who i thought was marginally faster than me and glued myself to his wheel as much as I could.
    50kph? wow. didnt notice that
    vague stats

    35 minutes
    25km travelled
    Average 34.75
That average doesnt seem to add up, but that's what the 'puter said, and i zero'd everything and nly rode about 25m past the line before falling off bike and gasping alot!

my expectations were that i'd finish last or close to and that i'd hopefully
    avoid crashing..
yeah, first 2 laps up the hill i think i was doing about 35kph and on the
back section it was about 50kph (my top speed was 53)
both times i wasnt gaining much if any on the lead riders/bunch
im actually pretty [censored] about my [censored] performance

you gotta go in with low expectations. my first was eye-popping but at least you know what to look for now. wheelsuck and rest if/when you can. dont look at your speeds/times etc. Dont ride on the outside of the pack and try not to be in the back half on that hairpin. the lead guys get rond and go steady up the hill and the lackend go hard to catch them again by the top. that makes a huge difference after a dozen laps

I raced last week and in C grade, my computer had an av. speed of 37.4
kmh. Then I found the bludgers in B grade average 35.5 kmh !

Well done for hanging in to the end. You probably did more work on your own
than what you would have done in the pack had you stayed there. That harder
effort will benefit your future fitness. Besides that, you paid your entry
fee and you wanted to get your full times worth of riding, didn't you.

I'll be heading down there for a race. It will be my first crit for the
year so i'm expecting some pain and suffering.

I swung by there last week to catch the end of C/D and watch A/B. The
numbers across all grades looked pretty healthy with out being crazy like
the Carnegie-Caulfield (Glenvale Crs) appear to have been recently.

You're right, that average doesn't add up. 25km in 35 min is 42.86(ish) kph.

hmmm. dont know what went awry then 😕

zeroed all numbers at the start and as I said just rode far enough to find flat patch of grass by roadside to collapse.
Was regularly doing 45kph DOWN the hill when on my own, but certainly not averaging that
