  1. Got some of these. No ketones at all. Nothing. What (if anything)
should I read into this, in the light of some of my previous postings?

    Alan -

All I saw was the post on a change in body oder. What stage are you
at, using Atkins? You might want to check the posts on fat fasts too,
    and what about exercise?

    If you haven't tried this:
Try collecting the urine in an old cup. Quickly dip the strip and shake
or tap off the excess. If there are measurable amounts of ketones, it should
start showing in a few seconds. Holding in the stream, as the instructions
suggest, may wash the indicating chemical off.
Usually it will be just pink. Purple may mean you are not drinking enough
    fluids.

  4. Try eating less and exercising more.

Nothing; ketostix tell you nothing about how your diet is progressing.
You may just be very well hydrated, you may have ketones in your blood
but not your urine, and you may be burning the rest for fuel, hence no
    ketonuria.

What does your current diet look like? :-)

  7. I agree. When I was in my weight loss phase, I would show moderate ketones
on the stix every day. Then I started taking lipase supplements to help
with stomach problems that I'd been having for a couple of years. The
lipase helped my stomach but also stopped the stix from showing anything. I
wasn't about to stop the lipase and go back to the stomach problems so I
just waited to see if it was going to cause any problems. I continued to
lose weight, and more importantly inches, so just because the stix didn't
show ketones didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

  8. I think it took about 6 weeks for me to show a satisfactory reading on a
Ketostix stick. Now, even my urinalyses at the doctor's office shows
    Ketones.

Ketostix are a motivational tool, and should not be taken too seriously.

Well, I've been away from the ng for awhile, so not sure what your previous
issues were, but I'd reiterate what others have said - don't get hung up on
the ketosticks. They are not necessary to low-carb dieting, and many people
don't show the "classic" reaction and become unnecessarily worried.

When I started low-carbing, I did use the ketosticks religiously. I noticed
that I did not get much reaction (if any) in the morning, but as the book
suggested, got my best reading in the evening. But after a while, even
though I was doing about 30 g carb/day, I stopped showing a reaction on the
sticks. I believe that after a shorter or longer time, your body simply
adapts and learns to burn most of the ketones for fuel, particularly if your
appetite decreases and you are eating below maintenance calories (which I
was). Bodies tend to be thrifty that way.

Also, those ketosticks can go "stale" pretty quickly, and not show a
    reaction.

All in all, once beyond the first few weeks, I would rely more on how you
are feeling, the level of appetite suppression you're experiencing, your
energy level, and particularly - weight loss. You also can determine how
many carbs you are taking in. If you are eating less than 100 g carb/day,
you're likely in ketosis, whether or not it shows on the ketosticks. Some
people may use smell, but in my experience that doesn't work reliably -
degree of hydration, how much protein and fat eaten, level of carb intake
(even within ketogenic parameters), and simply adaptation - all can result
in you either not experiencing, or not noticing, any change in body odor.
Each person will have their own favorite, most useful indicator for
determining when they are or are not in ketosis. Some find that they get a
certain slight taste in their mouth when in ketosis, others notice a short
headache each time they transition into ketosis. You'll find yours if you
    pay attention.

  10. My husband lost 30lbs. on Atkins and never once changed the color on a
    ketostick. ::shrugs:: go figure......
