  1. I am on week 2 of induction. I got some ketostrips and tested last
night, turned dark purple immediately. But, in the last week, my weight
hasn't been dropping at all. In fact, it's fluxed up a bit. Why?
I'm no where near my TOM (I control that myself via Vitex supplements-I
have to, if I don't, I get AF every 2 weeks and the BCP just made me
feel crappy and gain weight), I take 4 fiber pills a day and a multi
vitamin. I *think* I'm eating enough, but I'm not sure. I'm usually
over 2000 a day, but Fit Day says I burn closer to 3800 daily-should I
    be eating more?

  2. Induction is not about weight loss.

Induction is about getting you into ketosis, and getting you used to
the new diet. So, do not worry about it until the third week, when
you switch to OWL. However, eat "only enough to satisfy your hunger".
It's not an excuse to pig out.

Overall, don't worry about weight loss unless you stop losing weight
for SIX WEEKS OR MORE. Anything less than that is just a random
    fluctuation.

Might want to drink more water, though, if you're dark purple. You
only need to be faint purple for LC.

fitday does not even come close to accurately calculating BMR. make
sure you have yourself entered as sedentary/bedbound or whatever the
    lowest one is.

  4. You're eating too much.

  5. FitDay calculates BMR just fine. It's the calories burned for added
activities that it's totally over on. So I agree, enter yourself as the
lowest activity level to get something fairly accurate.

    no, it doesn't.

  7. FitDay calculates my BMR for 109 pounds as 1104 calories/day. Using
several online calculators, I get an average of 1200 calories for the same
weight. Some, like Atkins, were higher and some were lower than FitDay.
So FitDay's BMR calculation is just fine.
But FitDay gives much higher numbers for added activities than other
sources so I would only use it for the BMR and input custom numbers for
activities if the OP wants an accurate daily calorie burned number.

As you can see, everyone has a different opinion. Human chemistry does not
equate between people. You are unique in your body design.

Don't worry about it, just stick with what feels right for you. You will
end up controlling your body, and that's what you wanted, right?

    Jim,

I'm new on this forum, but....

I want to whole-heartedly agree with you. Too many people put way too
    much emphasis on actual weight.

As the body burns fat the muscle mass may actually increase - especially
in the first few weeks of this diet, exercise, weightlifting, etc. And
since muscle weighs more, people sometimes actually gain a LITTLE weight.

What matters most, Michelle, is that you are burning fat. If you're in
ketosis and you notice a positive change in your body, you're on the
right track. I went from 280 to about 225 in a little over a year (on a
not-so-strict regimen). But along the way, I hit patches where the
weight stayed the same or actually climbed a couple of pounds even tho
my clothes were getting looser and looser on me.

Point being - weight is NOT the only parameter. Changing body shape,
increased energy, looser-fitting clothes, and others must be watched.
Even Dr. Atkins talks about this in his books.

Keep it up & good luck.

muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. it's denser, not heavier.

You're talking about a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks. I agree,
you're right. He said it as it is, though. Muscle is more dense than fat.
Given a body weight, the more of that weight consists of muscle, the more
calories you have to consume to maintain it. That was the message I got
from his post, and I don't think anyone will disagree with it.

The probability that an older female is going to gain measurable muscle mass
and lose the same amount of fat at a pace that would account for staying at
the same weight while going through a noticeable body recomposition
metamorphosis is negligible. In fact, the probability that anyone will
achieve this type of effect from a diet and exercise regimen, other than a
young adult male, is highly unlikely.

all well and true, but muscle does not weigh more than fat - which is
the only thing i disagreed with.

we have enough misiniformation floating around in here. we don't need

Things to consider: I have to be careful of any "not real" foods. They can
put people into a stall, based on how you react to the different replacement
sweeteners. The sugar alcohols (Atkins bar), citric acid (some artificially
sweetened drinks), and the sweeteners themselves can cause stalls.

Caffeine can also have a detrimental effect. The tea could be a problem,
depending on if you react to it.

Try a few days without the artificially sweetened stuff and the tea. Skip
the Atkins shakes. Drink water. If you're getting cravings for sweet stuff,
try adding some glutamine to the water. I use about 1 teaspoon of powder to
a glass (10-12 qz.) This is about 5000 grams, you can also get glutamine in
capsule form. It does a fantastic job of cutting cravings and I don't mind
    the taste at all.

See if a few days with mostly water to drink shakes things loose, then
you'll want to add things back, one at a time to figure out what the problem
    food is.

For me, the only way I can maintain a weight loss consistently is to MOVE.
Try adding a little exercise as well. I know the diets say you don't need
to, but as with the rest of the suggestions here, everyone reacts
    differently.

IMO you're eating too much protein, not enough fat. That could also be the
cause of the bad breath you complained about in a previous post.
In the body protein converts to carbohydrate at a rate of about 58%. Eating
too much protein is like eating extra carbs.

Where are your green veggies? A good portion of your carbs every day should
be coming from vegetables not bars, cheese, shakes, artifical sweeteners,
taco bowls, etc. Onions are fairly high carb and should be used sparingly.

Dump the low fat/low cal substitutes. If you want whipped cream then take
some heavy cream and whip it.

    Are you drinking any water?

Other possible stall reasons...... the sugar alcohols in the bars, citric
acid and articial sweeteners in the soda, candy (even one piece) has no
    place in induction.

    Hope this helps.

I would suggest you eat more veggies. Try to plan them into your meals more
    often, or as snacks.
You also might want to avoid some of the atkins bars/shakes... or even diet
soda's have been known to stall people.

Overall, though, I wouldn't worry about not losing weight in one week. Have
you lost any inches this week? There were weeks when my weight remained the
same but I would lose an inch or two and know I was on the right track.

    Good luck.

I understand candy is a no-no on induction BUT, I was having dizzy
spells, and based on advice of another poster on here (they linked a web
page) it suggested I eat some glucose to take care of the problem. I
did, and it did. I'm not one to cheat, but my health is far more important.

The whipped cream, that was out to eat-it was the only sugar free
    option. *shrugs*

I didn't mean to start a major argument here. What I said was that
muscle MASS increases and weighs more. You yourself said that muscle is
more dense. That's my point: as you burn fat and, if you follow Dr.
Atkins' (or any relaible (?) deitician's) advice and increase your
activity level, you will gain muscle mass - again, with the actual
amount depending on each person's metabolism. And since a fubic inch of
muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat, my statements are correct.

JC said "The probability that an older female is going to gain
measurable muscle mass and lose the same amount of fat at a pace that
would account for staying at the same weight while going through a
noticeable body recomposition metamorphosis is negligible." JC may be
right, but again, that depends on the "older female" and her body type,
metabolism, amount of activity, etc., etc., etc.....

My whole point, and apparently Jim's, is that each person is unique and
that weight is not the only factor.

I certainly understand that your health is important. I see on that day you
only had 1343 calories. That's not much for how much you weigh. You may want
to make sure you get at least 8x your body weight in calories each day. That
    may help.
