Okay, this is day seven for me and I am only in the light pink stage on the
keto sticks. Should it not be darker by now? I am very careful to keep my
carbs to 20 or below a day.
Any suggestions?

Yes...you're fine. Keep at it.

The sticks only measure excess ketones. And they aren't very accurate.
If you've been drinking a lot of water, they may only show a trace,
while if you've gone awhile withou drinking water, the ketones will be
more concentrated and hence the strips will tend to be a darker color.
Also, I've seen days where I had no ketones showing at all. Yet, I
hadn't done anything different that I could attribute that to. Bottom
line, the strips have some limited use, but don't worry too much about
them.

They don't need to be dark. As long as it registering SOMETHING, you
are in ketosis, and that's all that matters. The amount of water you
drink can make a difference in how dark the sticks will turn, but will
not make a difference as to whether or not you are in ketosis.

What is your calorie level, and how much fat are you taking in?

I haven't been watching the calories and I am sure that I'm eating A LOT of
fat, even though I haven't been counting. I really wasn't aware that it was
necessary to watch the calories too. :-( I thought that with LC, it wasn't
necessary to count either. Humm, should have known it sounded to easy. :-)

Many say it's not necessary...and indeed, on induction it isn't as induction
is not really about weight loss...it's more about breaking the cycling of
carb addiction...
Some of us here do count calories, though (in addition to carbs). I'd say
don't worry about counting unless you get to the point where you feel you
need to in order to continue to lose...so just continue to watch carbs
closely...

Calories are going to count no matter WHAT diet you are on....
LC just seems to be easier and gives you a "metabolic advantage".
It is still much easier (and more enjoyable) than the standard high carb
low fat diet IMHO!
Don't give up....

If it's below 20, you're not eating enough vegetables.

Below 20 is required for the "induction" phase of a LC diet.
I try to keep mine under 25 pretty much all the time as that works best
for me! If you stick primarily to leafy greens, it's not all that
difficult to eat plenty of veggies and still stay below that magic
number. ;-)

each day. Maybe it's because I really only like lettuces/greens, broccoli,
cauliflower, green beans, spinach, and cabbage...none have many carbs to
'em...
Try adding some tomato to the salad. :-)
I have to watch overdoing those because I LOVE tomatoes!!!

<snip>
This isn't true. There are people who don't register color on the sticks and
are still in ketosis. The sticks only measure the excess in urine. Ketones
are excreted from the body in other ways. So if you use up most of the
ketones you produce and you're getting rid of them through sweat and
respiration also there could easily be little to no excess to measure in the
urine.

Yeah. Throw them away. Watch what you eat and lose your pounds. They're
useless in many ways.
--Perdu
I agree with this assesment.
Also, they can lose sensitivity by being old or handled improperly.
I can't recall much real use I obtained from them, except to see them
turn color to the faint tint.... and one day there was a dark tint, but
I never understood why.

No, "no more than 20" is required. "Below 20" is *not* required. And
most people skimp on the vegetables during this period, which is bad.
If you're eating below 20g carbs per day, eat more veggies.
Do more exercise.

One of my favorite foods: cheese'n'tomato sandwiches! With my 4 gm/slice
sprout bread, a thin slice of tomato, my 0 carb mayo, and a slice of
cheese...should be a pretty good sandwich! 🙂

For me it was brussels sprouts. Hated them before, love them now.
Love tomatoes - in season 🙂. Those tough hot house tomatoes they fly in in
the winter just aren't the same. Love onions so today with my steak I fried
up a medium onion with a bunch of mushrooms in butter, deglazed the pan with
a little worchestershire, and put about 1/4 of the mixture over my steak.
(And had cauliflower mash and asparagus also.) That should add some carbs
today! And I also had a protein shake before church, usually I don't eat in
the morning but have been trying to get better about that...so there's
another 6 carbs for the day. I will try peppers again, haven't liked them
in forever but they might be worth a try.
Thanks 🙂
