Yeah, that's a great source. Why would you be reading that [censored], in
the first place.
They just had an interview with Bush senior, showing off his new
putting green and mentioning how he likes to go really fast in his
boat. You don't think those items cost more than a couple of high end
bikes. If he can afford it, why not. I'm sure most presidents and
presidential hopefuls have a few expensive toys. It just doesn't
matter! I think it's great that Kerry is a cyclist.

Kerry's a cyclist, but he's about as far removed from the real world as
possible. The guy has 5 mansions, a gaggle of SUVs, private planes----and
tries to pass himself off as an envrionmentalist? He's just as rich, if not
richer, than Bush, and just as crooked. Come one---he's a Yalie, and a
Bonesman, to boot. Just another Bush.

They weren't "his" as of Earth Day - they then reverted to "the
family". Heh.

Bush has nowhere NEAR the kind of money in the Heinz-Kerry estate.
Not even remotely close. Still, watch Bush get singled out as the
"rich one"... heh.

So you dispute the fact he was on those two bikes?

Let's admit that a person HAS to be wealthy in order to run for office and
get over the fascination with other people's riches, shall we?

Oh, that's just because he tried to make it as a businessman.
If his dad's friends hadn't rescued him, he'd be bunking at the
Salvation Army by now.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!

So maybe he's the Presidential candidate equivalent of Robin Williams? Both
have enough money to afford quite a stable of nice machines.
So what's the issue with John Kerry having a pair of Serottas (or perhaps
even more)? I'm sure he has a number of different places he resides at
various times... if you can afford that, what's the big deal about having a
bike at each (instead of having to haul one bike around all the time)?
As far as luxury items go, even the most expensive of bikes is pretty
affordable compared to what one might spend on a car, boat, house on the
lake, mistress... the list goes on and on.

Eisenhower, Johnson, Carter and Clinton were not rich and could not
make the election on their money alone. Johnson had land, but wasn't
cash rich in any sense.
While it never hurt to be a rich white male, arguably party and
national election reforms over the years, taking the decision making
from the back room pols and limiting use of non-candidate money, have
made the nominating process more volatile and more open to a wealthy
outsider using their own money to be nominated. Curious result and
certainly not intended, but real. As long as the 'reforms' limit money
access and use, the nominating process will heavily favor either
insiders or outsiders that are rich.
Still, even now, it is connections and the ability to raise money that
makes the difference, not individual wealth. Powell is only well off,
but if willing (evidently not from all reports) he could easily mount
a legitimate campaign. Its not Bush''s small fortune, but his ability
to raise millions in a week of campaiging that makes him an always
formidable opponent. He's probably raised 20-30 times his own fortune
in the last three election cycles.

I could be wrong, but didn't his father make most of the money in that
family? I know W made some of his own, but didn't most of it came from
dad's seed money?
I looked and couldn't find anything definitive
either way. I saw no mention of his father
providing seed money for Arbusto.
I did read this today though:
"In 1990, the Senate barred senators from
accepting outside speaking fees. Mr. Kerry had
often earned an extra $25,000 to $30,000 annually
from speeches. He opened several lines of personal
credit, some as large as $100,000, at Boston
banks. His parents also provided a financial
"safety valve" when times got tight, he says.
Mr. Kerry says he doesn't remember how much money
he drew down from those lines...."

I agree Curtis. Except you missed Harry Truman, who was not wealthy by any
stretch of the imagination and had a fine reputation for financial rectitude.
In facts, I don't think any of our recent presidents was really wealthy enough
to afford the presidential campaign without raising money from conventional
sources. You do see people running for the senate who seem to have no
political competency but they do have boat loads of cash. Interestingly
enough, many of these cash rich people do not win the election so maybe
american voters are not as stupid as they sometimes seem.
I can think of one president who might have been a bit of an exception and that
was John F. Kennedy, whose father reputedly said that he (Kennedy's father) did
not want to buy a landslide.

I have no problem with that - just finding it kinda funny that those
who want to denounce Bush as "rich" are going to have to deal with
lots of cognitive dissonance if they plan to vote for Kerry.
