I find "BUGGER OFF" works best in Britain, but it's not as rude in the

Mick,

In my 40+ years of riding, the thing that's always worked for me was a
screaming, "NO!" and pointing an index finger off in the distance. Be
firm and demanding (and DON'T TRY TO OUTRUN IT)! It'll nip at your
front wheel and bring you down.

We used to have an old French ad from the turn of the 19th century on
the wall in our bike shop touting the benefits of a derringer like
pistol!

Raising and lowering my arm fast pointing at the dog and yelling "NO!"
"BAD DOG!" has usually worked for me. They usually got a stupid look on
their face perhaps remembering the newspaper swattings they got when
they were a puppy.

When that failed a Silca pump with a metal Campy tip across the nose
usually deterred the unruly cur!

Broke a couple of Silca pumps that way.

Forget the commercial items. A small water pistol filled with cloudy
ammonia. Keep it handy and go looking for the dog that's bothering you.
Wait till he's close and shoot him in the face. The fumes are bad! He
will NEVER go near a cyclist again. Proven. Cheap. Not very nice to
dogs, but look at it this way - if you complained to authorities the
dog would be put down or at least locked up tight, so you're doing it a
favour by teaching it to stay home.

I have used a water bottle with "Top Job", an ammonia-based cleaning
product, with great success. This is only when water and shouting has
not worked.

I agree that it is best to sacrifice a quality ride or two by seeking
out the usual offenders and setting them up for conditioning/lessons.

We differ here. In my world, the authorities give the owner too many
chances. I have never heard of an at-large dog being put down unless a
human injury had occurred. In fact, you would have to report an owner
multiple times before a fine was even issued. I'd rather spend my time
riding.
