Back on the wagon and got my "starting" numbers. Thought I could get some responses to my bloodwork. Doctor mailed the results to me with little comment.
Male Age 35 Ht. 5' 9" Wt. 325 Total Cholesterol - 186 LDL - 90 HDL - 35 Trig. - 304 Chol./HDL ratio - 5.31
Recommendations:
Recheck 90 days. Exercise 30 min 4-5 times a week. Low Insulin Modification Diet - that's right doctor recommended low carb.
Been luking years, posted rarely. Trying again after going from 345 in Aug 01 to 225 in Aug 02.
The only number that *really* jumped out at me was your Triglycerides. They are pretty darn high. Mine were high too and my doctor said that fatty tissue around the liver can elevate this number, even if your cholesterol numbers are good. I didn't see your blood pressure though is it 120/80 or lower?
By the way, just as a word of encouragement, I am now finishing up day 20 for me and I haven't had a single craving for carbs yet! My secret: I've been asking God to help me make this lifestyle change. He has ALWAYS come through for me, and I'm sure He will for you too if you just ask Him.

Hi, Brett - did you have any blood glucose tests done too? Those chol numbers indicate quite a lot of insulin resistance, which is probably why the doc recommended a low-carb diet - and good for him!

Brett, have you figured out why you regained the weight? You had better understand that before you go on another diet or history will repeat itself. Did you feel deprived? Did you start binging...what happened? If you lost the weight in 2002 by going low carb, you must have gotten away from it drastically.

Good luck, with both the diet and the exercise.
Nicky.
Sorry, I left out some of the info. Doc marked glucose, kidney functions, liver functions, electrolytes, proteins, and blood counts as normal. I am the healthiest 5'9" 300lb thirty five year old I know.

I don't have an exact answer. I do know it was not a crises or life changing event. Not deprived - I was perfectly happy on induction levels for most of that year. I don't think I binged other than my normal carb craving cycles (during weight regain). My belief seems to be that I thought I was invincible. I was high on compliments and my new clothes and energy and all that comes from losing the weight. I thought I had conquered my old ways and no longer needed to pay attention to what I learned. My former diet and weight slowly returned and here I am.

Well, then that was a good lesson -- you need to change your habits PERMANENTLY if you want to retain the benefits. That doesn't mean depriving yourself -- you are only depriving yourself if you stay on Induction instead of moving into OWL. It is NOT necessary to keep to induction levels beyond 2 weeks. I would venture to guess that it IS part of why you wandered away from it. Induction is restricted to 20 carbs and certain foods for 2 weeks because Dr. Atkins felt that, at such a drastic level, EVERYONE would get into ketosis and 2 weeks was a good period of time to start to change habits. Adding non-induction foods back in and increasing the carb level by 5 carbs/day per week until you either get out of ketosis or stop losing is a GOOD plan. You will still lose weight and your food options are MUCH more varied, making it more likely that you will stick to the plan. It will NOT slow down your weight loss until you hit your max carb level for losing weight.

I think you'll be fine this time. You'll lose the weight and keep it off because now you realize you need to watch out for high glycemic carbs for the rest of your life. After all, Dr. Atkins didn't call it "low carb", he called it "controlled carb". That's what a lot of the "news" stories on the Atkins diet gloss over or miss entirely.
Chart it up to a lesson needed to be learned and go ahead and get back to where you want to be.

Fasting glucose is often the last number to deteriorate in the progression, your lipid numbers show an indication of very high insulin resistance, (trig/HDL=8.7, you really want that ratio <3, <2 is better.) Most dr's don't run HbA1c routinely, yet. He most likely did recommend low carb because you are in imminent danger of developing diabetes.
