I have a "test" ride I do that is 9.5 miles with 400-450 ft. of climbing.. or about 40ft. - 45ft. of climbing per mile. Best I've averaged on this is a little under 20mph, and I don't race. Perhaps I should? lol I've just never felt like I was fast enough to compete.
This forum will be an excellent tool as far as your training, but you will get many different philosophies. Do some looking around here, and perhaps pick up some books on training. ( I personally like Friel's Training Bible, but I've heard very good things about "Training with Power"😉
If you have just started?... just get some miles in on the bike. Once you're into it a little more, some interval work, tempo work..etc. will get your speeds up more. It's not necessarily a fast process but it will come.
As I said, you'll find a lot of information here on training methods so my best suggestion at this point (outside of getting a coach) would be do a lot of reading and see what fits best for you.
Good luck!!

I enjoyed the race yes it was just one hill its a good course I think though the climb is tough (for me) I would like to race it again. I think I will use this as a base to measure my fitness as its right near my house.
I have been getting a fair ammount of miles on the bike I usualy do about 50-60 miles a week but last week I did 100 miles and I dont feel worse off. I will have to be carefull not do to much tempting though it is.
As for training intervals sound like a good idea I think I will try using hills for interval training all I need is a loop. Hmm there is one near where I live the climb is less than a mile but according to the map its 14% and this means I can practice my decents on the other side.
I do need to do some more reading I suppose training is a topic that you can summerise in a few words. But that'll have to wait till tommorow I'm posting late at night again its a bad habit I have.
Thanks for the help,
