You'll have it made in the shade.

Keep it under your bike hat.

    Buzz off.

    Etc.

I've seen people with these, and wondered what they were.

I've had dragonflies literally zipping around me eating mosquitos, and it didn't seem to scare 'em
off at all - they were hungry suckers.

Anyone actually used one of these? I'd buy it if it worked (and got decent battery life). I hate
chemical repellants, but the mosquitoes find me irresistible. I gave them a wonderful feast just
    last night!

They sell these at Walmart. I had one and turned it on then went outside and saw mosquitos
hovering around and past it before they rested on my arm to bite me. The arm that was holding this
    quack device.

I would try to follow mosquitos around with it to see if it would scare them away, but they
could care less about this stupid device, only about the human arm that was holding it that they
    really wanted.

Get one and see for yourself, then just return it the next day. If enough people do this, then
perhaps we can get these quack devices out of the market place once and for all.

If there was any mosquito repellent that worked, we would all know about it, and all the dozens of
other "repellents" would eventually have gone out of business. If these things worked, the military
would buy them in bulk and the company who invented it would brag about how the military uses it. If
they worked, the news would have reported this and no one would be spraying chemicals on their arms,
they would all just go out and buy these type of devices.

    From Consumer Reports:

Probably one of the most popular, least expensive and most decorative garden repellents are
citronella candles and citronella oil torches. But as festive as they may make the yard appear,
there is no concrete evidence of their effectiveness.

Citronella candles may repel mosquitoes in areas where you can control the air flow, Ramberg says.
But he does not put any credence in the use of coil or

sonic devices. The CDC does not mention the use of citronella in its mosquito-prevention
literature, but it does add that vitamin B and ultrasonic devices are NOT effective in preventing
    mosquito bites.

Consumer Reports' May issue also reported the results of its tests on mosquito zappers and traps. It
said bug zappers, ultraviolet-light devices, (which start at about $20), killed barely more
mosquitoes than a nearby piece of sticky paper, or less than one-quarter of mosquitoes in the room.

Nothing repels mosquitos. Lose clothing that covers your entire body keep them from getting to your
skin. If you just keep moving your shoulders so that your shirt is moving across you skin, no
mosquito can bite, as it can't poke through your shirt and your skin if the shirt is moving across
your skin constantly. Wearing cloth that makes the distance from the outer part of the cloth to the
surface of your skin thicker than the length of the mosquito's "needle" will also make biting
    impossible.

Humans are supposed to be smarter than mosquitos. Just use your more intelligent brain and you
should be able to outsmart them all on your own.

    <snip wealth of info>

Thanks for the info. I suspected as much, but hoped it might be better.

Yeah, yeah. I'm pretty sure I'm smarter than the average mosquito, they just have the numbers and
adaptation on their side. I also get too hot pretty easily, so that makes all the extra clothing a
bad choice for me. If I just ride really fast all the time it helps, but they always seem to be able
to get a few bites in on my elbows and backs of my knees. If I get the right tail wind, then they
can just bite me as I hammer along. If it's a deep woodsy ride with slow climbs I just douse myself
in DEET and that works, I just hate that stuff.

Right. The "Deep Woods" version is just a really, really long strip and you have to wear it mummy
style. It doubles as a hair removal system for that pesky unwanted (or not) body hair.

There is actually one that actual tests have proved works fairly well. Unfortunately, its a mosquito
ATTRACTANT (its a word now, damn it!), not a repellent. Its those propane-fueled CO2 generators.
They come with a mosquito trap, and they actually seem to work. They're also damn expensive. And
it'd be awkward carrying around a propane tank on your back while biking, and even harder to figure
out how to get the CO2 output onto your riding buddy and not you.
