Just a newbie question

expensive. Unless one is talking single speed.

You need to describe the intended use of this bike, be
realistic.

Well, basically I want to ride it in the streets and from time to time take it off road, I don't want a heavy bike like the ones sold at the regular Walmart stores, I want and I need something I can pick up easily to stowe it away and when I take it off road, pick up easily in a hard terrain (for a newbie like me).
I'm not looking for sofisticated suspensions they add weight to the bike.

Where do you live? If there's a Giant dealer near you, I
would suggest a Giant Iguana. These are pretty light.
Specialized Hardrocks are beefier so you won't break
anything, but slightly heavier. Go to a local bike shop and
try some out.

Used hard tail, most anything from a reputable company, will
be your best bang for the buck; Giant, Specialized, Trek ...
Look online (mtbr, ebay ...) or locally. Don't get hung up
on brand names at this point in time, or ever I suppose.
Just find something that seems in good shape and fits well,
a local bike shop can help you determine both criteria.

Go your local bikeshops and look for a good basic hardtail;
Preferably last years model and hammer them for a good deal.

Belive it or not, I live in Mexico and we don't have many bike dealers down here but I'm considering getting a bike in the US, and for what I read here, Giant bikes are very good, I don't know if it will compare to my NISHIKI.
So, do you guys think I would be spending around 200 bucks for a good one?

I was quoted a 2004 Giant Iguana for $700CDN before tax...
Pretty costly for a hardtail with only front disc (then
again, to more experienced riders, it would be a drop in the
bucket I guess)
