  1. Hi,

I'm training for a marathon in about a year from now. I did my first
half-marathon a couple of months ago.

I just bought myself a leather jumping rope. I wanned to know you
opinion about this exercise. Is it a good alternative to running to
diversify the training a bit? Of course it's not as good for the leg
muscles, but how is it for the heart?

Also, a little stupid question, since it's brand new, the leather rope
seems all stiff and was folded. Do I need to do something to make it
    less stiff?

    Thanks a lot.

Congrats! Since you didn't mention your time, we know you suck.

You need jax, and a rubber ball too.

Yes, just show it a pic of Doug Freese, one look at him would make
    anyone go soft.

As if you didn't look gay enough running in your Spiderman costume,
but now you'll be jumping rope too? All you need now are pigtails, a
french maid outfit, and you can move in with Doug Freese.

What the heck. You have a lot of time to waste or what.

in his basement). Just ignore them (or him/her)

It's good aerobically as running but could it replace running? I
doubt it but if you use it as a supplement it could be beneficial but
again Running is probably the best thing you could do

How much mileage are you doing now ? What was your half marathon time ? What
is your goal time for the marathon ? How old are you ?

Without knowing any of this, my inclination is to say, do as much running as
you can. Cross training is OK, but don't get into the mindset that it's an
adequate substitute for specific training. You could probably run a respectable
local 5k on jumping rope alone with very little or no running -- it would be
slow compared to your potential, but still much better than not training. But
doing something as long as a marathon requires quite a lot of specific training.

Jumping rope can be considered a form of plyometrics to improve
explosivity of your running. It can be good training to supplement your
running, *depending* on what your total plan is and when you include it
in your periodization. I would have just used some clothesline or
something similar. Or you could just do single-legged hops, which
removes some of the coordination factor.

I'm 20 years old, 145 Lbs, 6' tall, and I did my half marathon in 2h.

From a bit of googling, it looks to be about 20% easier per unit time. I
don't see that it gives much cross training though, since it consists of
efficiently bouncing (which is a lot like running, except at least when you
run you get from A to B), and you get a lot of the same G forces that
    running offers.

If you're having a hard time adapting to a reasonable mileage base due to
injuries or aches and pains, I'd suggest cycling. A couple of members of
this group do a lot of cycling and it seems to compliment their running and
    offers more of a contrast.

If you can stay healthy and pain-free, I'd just stick to running, and use
different surfaces and terrain and rest days as variation, rather than a
    separate activity.

Use a leather conditioner (Google it).
