I hadn't seen this thread when I posted my own "Dead pro-cyclist: Monday, 08/12/2003" comment
yesterday.

In todays DM there was an page with the header "Drugs In Sport" - Dwain Chambers was mentioned
elsewhere. The specific headline regarding Jimenez was "Is he a victim of bloodsport on wheels?"

Since he hasn't trained for a couple of years I would guess that it is unlikely to be any of the
things that the Daily Mail hints at. AFAIK the risks with EPO etc arise when you are taking it but
would have dissipated long ago in an out of circulation rider.

Well you wouldn't expect the Mail to get it right would you? ;-)

I read it as most likely an overdose or some such, given the reactions of Them As Knew Him, but what
do I know? I'm just a cyclist with depression.

Hi Tony

Quite possibly. However, several cyclists have died young. I'm a tad older than 32 and have suffered
from mild depression myself. My feeling down in the dumps hasn't yet killed me, although my elevated
BP might do so as and when.

I read that article today (colleague's copy, I hasten to add). Tired, lazy rehash of various old
stories, mainly about EPO. Couple of quotes from 'Rough Ride' & 'Breaking the Chain', plus bons mots
from assorted cyclists of yesteryear.

A half-hour's work, if that. Then a sub-editor bungs on a hysterical headline ('bloodsport on
wheels', etc). Hey presto - a Daily Mail 'article' is born.

Notice also the strapline bit at the top of the page: "DRUGS IN SPORT". Jumping to
conclusions, perhaps?

Tis strange how maw many don't read the DM but seem to manage to glean articles from that rag.

Um, mild depression is Not Serious. I hope you never get the not-mild version. Mine isn't that bad,
but it can be pretty bleak at times. I can quite see how it could cause people to top themselves.
