Greetings mateys -- I have always loved running but have never been able to become a "real" runner
for various reasons, the main one being that I'm really not interested in becoming a competitive
runner, I just like to put on my shoes, go out and tour the 'hood for about 30 minutes every day at
a moderate jogging pace. I need a place to ask questions and shoot the breeze without getting
dissed. Could this be that place? I tried alt.running for a while and got run off by some of the
attitudes, I'm hoping the "rec" in the title of this newsgroup means there's room for people who
just run (or jog in my case) for fun. One question I have that I haven't been able to find a simple
answer to is - I have occasional pain in my knees (my left leg is about 1/4" shorter than my right,
so my guess is that my gait tends to be wonky) and was wondering what are these bands that I see
runners wearing around their knees? Do they help with knee pain? Are they worth using for
recreational slow runners like myself, or not? I don't have the pain all the time, just
occasionally, and it rarely lasts more than 24 hours if I rest. Thanks -- M9

I was reading a running book recently and read that very simply, "if you run you are a runner" thus
you already are a runner. Never won a marathon, who cares. Every journey begins with the first step.
I tried alt running as well and I agree it isn't very helpfull. Go to a good bookstore or library
and buy or read all you can, text books magazines anything you can find. This will answer many of
your questions and raise many more. Questions are the source of intelligence, so never stop asking.
Not sure about the bands as I am a novice myself. "minerva nine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Hi M9 ... I have one of those bands you asked about. I wear it sometimes because I have tendonitis
in my right knee. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I guess the band helps take some stress off
the patellar tendon. I'm not completely sure, but when my tendonities flares up, I do find it
helpful. Hope that answers your question at least a little... 🙂 I know exactly what you mean about
meeting with some less-than-friendly attitudes in the groups. The same has happened to me in the
past when I once posted about running a half marathon. I was made to look pretty stupid. If you'd
like to chat about running or whatever, feel free to email me, I would enjoy it! Take care! 🙂"minerva nine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<[email hidden]>...

I've been frequenting this group for a couple of months now. It's true that there is an unusually
high number of idiots in this group, but there are also some people that are knowledgable and happy
to help you out. Stick around, ignore the jackasses and get some good info from the others. -
MN not sure about your pain Bill Rodgers ( i believe i read some where) left leg is also 1/4 shorter
than his right but that did not stop him from winning the races he ran .... as for "real runner" ,
not all here have won races / not all here run at sub 5 / not all here have done marathon / i have
trained with a coach of walkwrs,. She walked as fast as i would train to run . So most i f not all
are slow runners or fast walkers. Me i am a plodder plodzillaminerva nine said:

Hello M9:
My guess is that the pain is due to your gait. I have some knee pain if i run for hours or doing a
lot of runs on the running tracks, in which case the bends stress out one of my knees. I don't know
about the bands, but one thing I know for sure is that you can take stress off your knees by
strengthening your thighs, or quadriceps to be precise. To do so, you may do hill runs which are
great as they don't jerk your body much during running and really strengthen your legs while
improving technique - head over shoulders over hips over knees over toes, or you could go to the
gym and do the leg press. In any case, please do rest your legs and don't stress it too much. Take
care, Pidus."minerva nine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message "]news:[email hidden]...

has some good articles on shoes, and a "shoe finder" that will suggest models, but I liked the shoe
finder ("shoe dog," they call it) at www.roadrunnersports.com better (takes into account more
factors, like body weight and overall milage). If you overpronate on one or both sides due to your
wonky leg, you might find that "stability" shoes will cost you a bunch more than your squishy old
department-store specials, but keep your joints much happier. -

Well, given that the creative responses to my posts outnumbered the boneheaded ones by a wide
margin, perhaps I won't flounce off in a huff just yet. I particularly liked the 'shoe dog' link

I've been running 17 yrs. and haven't always loved running...actually I used to hate it. I started
running to avoid future health problems that were headed my way (hypertension) but found it became
part of my life. I run maybe one race per year for fun...and I will continue to run as long as I
possibly can. My left leg is also 1/4" shorter than my right, however I did not experience knee
pain...mine was hip & lower back pain. I began using a lift in my shoe(s) and that has taken care of
the pain....that was 2 years ago and I'm still doing fine.Hang in there, Tim

those kinds... thanks!Quoted message said:

stretches, in which you stand upright, bend your knee, and grab your foot, pulling it up towards
your butt, are really bad for your knees. Even worse is when you lie down on your back, bend your
knee, and grab your foot so your calf is underneath you or splayed out to one side.jen

Lyndon,
I am not a competitive runner either! I run for several reasons: to stay in shape, to relieve
stress, and to be in the outdoors. It makes me feel good! I run as many 5ks as I can, I did one a
few weeks ago in Logan, Utah. The only thing I struggle with is making time to do it while I'm
working and a full-time college student.Do you prefer to run outside or at a gym? Why do you run? Any creative ideas you have on adding
variety to a running schedule?I'm new to this newsgroup, but it looks pretty cool.
