How big of a difference does wearing a jersey make when riding? Does it keep you any drier/cooler? Are the advantages worth the 70 bucks they cost? I am thinking of getting a jersey (Primal Wear to be more specific) and am wondering if its worth it, or if i should just get an athletic shirt.
Cycling specific jerseys have a few specific advantages. 1) The fabrics wick away moisture to keep you dry. 2) They have pockets across the back to hold keys, food, etc. 3) They're cut longer in the back than shirts made for other sports. This will keep you from getting a big sun burn stripe across your lower backe. While you can spend over $70 on some of the fancier ones, you can get some solid color ones for $30 to $40 at places like Performance Bike or Nashbar.

Search this forum. Did a long thread on it less than 2 months ago. Good deals on pro quality jerseys on eBay.

Agree with the other posters remarks. But, if you don't have the $40 or so to spend on a jersey right now, just go with a snug-fitting, thin T shirt. Key is to have a tight fit so it doesn't flap in the breeze or fly up your back.
Polypropylene, polyester, or a poly-cotton blend would be better that 100% cotton.

I really like the full zipper jersey's myself. I just recently purchased one and I really liked it. The full zipper makes it easier to get in and out of and it offers the ultimate ventilation when you need it. If you layer you also can strip easier -- also if you ride with the women and you have a six-pack -- it gives you the upper edge on the short zipper cyclists.
I personally also like loose fitting jersey's too.
