    Jan not happy
    Jan Ullrich

Jan Ullrich has responded to criticism levelled at him by T-Mobile team
manager Walter Godefroot, saying he will discuss the matter with Godefroot
at the HEW Cyclassics round of the world cup in Hamburg this weekend.

After Ullrich failed to make the podium in the Tour de France, Godefroot
questioned his commitment, saying that six-time winner Lance Armstrong
"lives for cycling" while Ullrich merely "cycled to live". In an interview
with Le Figaro, Godefroot said Ullrich lacked the necessary "killer
instinct" and added, "we all focused on Jan. He wanted to win the Tour but
did not even win a stage."

Speaking on a German TV talk show on Monday, Ullrich responded, "I cannot
let that go. You should ask the people who I work with and not someone like
Walter Godefroot who I speak to on the telephone twice a year -- if at all."

Ullrich said his Tour had been derailed by illness. "I couldn't attack the
yellow jersey. I was ill, with a fever. Normally I should have spent a week
in bed. To attack Lance Armstrong was impossible, but if I had been healthy,
things would have been different." Ullrich said he had picked up an illness
    from his one-year-old daughter.

Ullrich added, "I will clear up what [Godefroot] said. If he says it to my
face I will take the appropriate steps."

T-Mobile team spokesman Olaf Ludwig said he did not know what Ullrich meant
by this. "I don't know whether he means that generally or personally," said
Ludwig. "The situation is this: Godefroot gmbh has a contract with T-Mobile
and Jan is under contract until 2006."

  2. Hey Chester, how about just a snippet and the link? Not necessary to do
the full Brian Lafferty treatment by copying an entire article. Your
own view on this is the subject. What's your point?

I think Walter has good reason to rip into Jan, as I'm sure many rbr
regulars understand and have discussed, at length, his novel approach to
training for the biggest race of the season. Picked up a bug from his
    daughter, indeed.

Even more reason to think that after the Olympics Jan say's "The hell with

If Vino and some of his other teamates take Jan's side, defend him, and want

    he's done.

  4. Jan at least did not accuse Armstrong of being on drugs as an excuse nor did
    he cry about Lance's tactics.

    Jan not happy
    Jan Ullrich
    Photo: © Caroline Yang

You should ask the people who I work with and not someone

    like

    Quoted message said:

Walter Godefroot who I speak to on the telephone twice a year -- if at

    all."

    Quoted message said:

Ullrich said his Tour had been derailed by illness. "I couldn't attack the
yellow jersey. I was ill, with a fever. Normally I should have spent a

    week

    Quoted message said:

in bed. To attack Lance Armstrong was impossible, but if I had been

    healthy,

    Quoted message said:

things would have been different." Ullrich said he had picked up an

    illness

    Quoted message said:

    from his one-year-old daughter.

Ullrich added, "I will clear up what [Godefroot] said. If he says it to my
face I will take the appropriate steps."

T-Mobile team spokesman Olaf Ludwig said he did not know what Ullrich

    meant

    Quoted message said:

by this. "I don't know whether he means that generally or personally,"

    said

    Quoted message said:

Ludwig. "The situation is this: Godefroot gmbh has a contract with

    T-Mobile

    Quoted message said:

and Jan is under contract until 2006."

Godefroot is an idiot. First, even if there were issues with Jan's training
and/or dedication, ripping into someone is a [censored] way to inspire one to
do better. Second, several people here felt there was an issue with
illness before anything was mentioned. It show's Jans level of class to me
to not be whining about a cold or flu as an excuse why he was doing so
poorly at the beginning. Anyone who has children knows that under 3 years
old, children have not developed the antibodies for colds and flu's and are
always getting sick. It makes sense by the results. After the infection
clears a little then Jan is back to strength.

Leave it to someone that is so bright as Adams to not know that a
parent learns that for their life from the time their child is born
until they leave the house the parent will have three colds a year,
multiple flu cases and everything from scabbies to ringworm.

It ought to be really interesting to see what Adams has to say about
his ignorant statement in another decade.

Did it ever occue to you that there can only be one that is "the best" at a
time? Not everyone can win the Tour, there is only one winner per year, etc.
How many other ways can I say it? What if Jan won, would that make Lance "a

Damn, people are so [censored] stupid.

No, because Lance trains his butt off while Jan does not.

I saw the interview, which was about half an our long. I thought about
posting a summary here, but did not because of the post tour Lance
    bashing/idolizing idiocy going on.

Some remarks though, after that interview I completely believe him being
sick. He said he slept / lived in the guestroom the week before going
to the tour because his daughter was ill, and how hard this was for him,
knowing he won't see her for four weeks after that. A little bit too
elaborate to be just an excuse, esp. for a guy like Ullrich.

He said he didn't talk about being ill in the tour because he feared
that his opponents might try to capitalize on his weakness if they knew
about it. He said he was already ill when going into the tour. Before
the Pyrenees he thought he might have cured it, but now we know what
    happened.
He also said that he doesn't think he would've been able to challenge LA
even without his illness in this tour.
One observation by me: I think the result of Ullrich in the prologue
compared to the other two time trials also hints to illness.

About training, the (dumbass) reporter repeated what Lance said about
"I'm on the bike Christmas and New Year's eve", to what Jan spontanously
    replied "Me too!".
His stance was that he is content with his training methods, and argued
that his wins in vuelta, tour de suisse, olympic gold and silver medals,
etc. were a good evidence for that. He said that LA as a very good
tactician had created that picture of the "Supertalent" Ullrich to water
    down pressure on himself.

Unrelated to that interview, I feel that Godefroot realizes he might
have made a big mistake, because he might soon find out how important
Ullrich is for him - i.e. some marketing guys from T-Mobile will explain
    it to him.

I reckon it was worth 4-5 minutes to Lance last year and Jan this year. i.e.

Ullrich is for him - i.e. some marketing guys from T-Mobile will explain
    it to him.

    Thanks for the summary.

Thing is, I don't think LANCE's kids are in day care.
Jan's either. Which means they don't get anywhere near
the exposure that our kids got.

I think I read somewhere that Laurent Jalabert would move to a hotel
away from his family for weeks at a time at critical points in the
season to avoid picking up illnesses.

Thanks for the info. I don't think you could find anyone who knows Jan that
would question him on this. I don't know what happened this year. Of the two
people we talk to fairly regularly one person is in Athens, the other had
pneumonia and some other problems and didn't work this Tour.
Jan is just Jan. I love him because he's one of us at heart. He races
bicycles, he loves life, and enjoys it, he's not consumed by it, and not
willing to be beaten into something he isn't.
Lance in his Spartan (yes I capitalized that on purpose) world may win, but at
what price. I'll stand with the flawed #2 as my #1

Did it ever occue to you that there can only be one that is "the best" at a
time? Not everyone can win the Tour, there is only one winner per year, etc.
How many other ways can I say it? What if Jan won, would that make Lance "a
loser that does not know how to train...yada yada"?

Damn, people are so [censored] stupid.

Yeah, they are. Jan was beaten by 3 riders this year, not Armstrong
alone. You seem to have missed that minor bit about the race.

IIRC Lance AND Jan were both ailing early in the race. Hence the sudden
attack by Beltran stuck Jan where it shouldn't have, though it nearly
stuck Lance, too. I think Lance had the trots, which was they key
    contributor to his dehydration.

Godefroot is an idiot. First, even if there were issues with Jan's training
and/or dedication, ripping into someone is a [censored] way to inspire one to
    do better.

Oh really? Ullrich's 2,000,000 EURO salary should be a motivation,
being in the best team of the world should be a motivation, having the
whole team at his service should be a motivation, ending 2nd 5 times
should be a motivation, Armstrongs weakness last year should be a
motivation, having his own mentor should be motivating, having a
personal trainer and a personal soigneur should be motivating...
Ullrich just has everything that's pointing him to one objective:
winning the Tour. I don't think Godefroot also needs to inspire
Ullrich. He is the manager of the whole TEAM. He is paying Ullrich a
lot just for one race. And then Godefroot can't even give critics??
Well this is the world upside down. If you don't do your job well, i
think your boss will also tell you that things will have to be better
    next time.

It all has the do with the will to win, the will to be the best.
Armstrong is the example of that. Ullrich ends 4th, hardly shows any
signs of disappointment and says he is happy how his friend and the
team have ridden the Tour. That shows a lack of ambition to me and i
don't think you can still change someone at the age of 30. IMO
Ullrich will never win the Tour again.

Ok, so maybe this mysterious cold did cost 3-4 minutes in the
Pyrenees. Ullrich was better in the Alps, but all he could do was
following. He wasn't capable of sprinting for stage wins and did
loose a lot of time in the TT's. Ullrich should start the tour with
the form he had during the last week of the Tour. Only then he could
    be a threat.

  20. Motivation idiocy is still rampant at RBR..

    1. There isn't a PRO who isn't training countless upon countless hours. Lance superiority isn't only training, but it is talent and tactics. Lance sells himself short if he denies that.
    2. If we all take a deep breath we see that Ulrich has an absolutely staggering palmares. Olympic, domestic and world titles, TdF, Vuelta, TdS, Second rankings TdF (Since when is it bad to make the top 3???) etc.

Is there anyone here in his right mind that Ulrich(or any GC rider) has no motivation? No ability to mentally stand pain? If you think that you disqualify yourself as a cycling "expert". Just look at how they all suffer in the Mountain stages. It's not a lack of "pain-endurance" that makes the difference, Lance is simply a better athlete in the TdF.
