Is that Rockit? I don't remember it being that rutted.

Wow! The whole canyon wasn't that green last year at this time.

I'll be out in the O.C. in about a month for pre-con and I definately
think I'll be adding a day to the stay

Wow... I can't fathom that type of temperature. Kudos to you for getting out
and making the best of it. Do you have to wear eye protection to keep them
from freezing?

Give me a few months to think about it... ;-)

It's actually Stair Steps, and is in great condition considering all the
rain. Most of the trail is similar to the rocky section of Rockit (but more
technical) and is reminiscent of SoMo. It's the "mildest" of the backside
trails at Aliso.

It's definitely more more lush this year. We're doing trail maintenance in
the mountains next weekend and I can't wait to check out all the water and
growth. Hopefully I'll be able to get a greener version of this shot this
year:

If you've got the legs it's always a good idea to extend the stay. :)
There are lots of great riding, whether you prefer mountains or hills.

I was under the impression Aliso/Wood Canyon was going to be closed until at
least this weekend (this according to Dean Stepper who spoke with the
rangers). Was it actually open or were you guys poaching? If it's open I
should have been there, it's been way too long since I've been on my bike.

Dressing right for that kind of weather is an artform. If you
are warm when you start, then you are probably going to
overheat once you get going, and you DON'T want to sweat.

I was pretty cold for the first 15 minutes, but by the time my
body warmed up the rest of the trip was fine. The only worry
is stopping. Stops of any more than a few minutes get cold
very quickly.

All I had on Sunday was a pair of bike tights, two layers of
bike jersey, fleece vest, jacket and wool cap. I didn't have
any kind of eye protection on then since it is a real problem
when it gets fogged up, though on some days glasses are a must
when the wind is directly in your face.

About this time last year, the group I bike with did a 1.5
hour night ride at -8F. With the 'windchill' the local papers
were reporting it at -40F. We haven't hit those temps. this
year (yet) but I'm kind of looking forward to it... or at
least the beer and food after the ride. :)

PS: You can see copies of TWO local newspapers that wrote
stories about the ride at this link (scroll down the page to
Jan. 15th):

I just checked, it's open. Woohoo. Time to get out there before the rains
hit tomorrow.

It's been open since last Friday. It's always best to get the information
from a reputable/trustworthy source (I've never thought about checking with
"Dean Stepper" and am glad I didn't).. For Aliso, here's one of the places
you can check:

He apparently had spoken to the rangers and I would think they were
reputable. Work must have gone quicker than anticipated. I actually
checked on SoCalMTB.com. One of the rangers post there and lo and behold:
Open. I'm sorry I missed riding last weekend.

I'm just ribbin' you for jumping to conclusions based on hearsay.

Although those guys are good rangers to (generally) get information from,
those aren't the actual rangers of the park...

I'm going out this afternoon close to town, but am limited to the trails
hard and frozen enough to be rideable, and not so icey as to risk major
owwies. but that said, I'm quite jacked to be off the trainer and actually
riding (even a little) this time of year.

Chris, Laguna Wilderness and El Moro were closed to bikes but they opened
Aliso Woods last weekend. Still muddy in spots and major damage at the
bottom of Mathis. Rode there Sunday. Saturday did San Gabriel's,
Strawberry Peak Trail.

I'm going to go for a spin today before the rains come back

Actually... I also rode Laguna Wilderness last Sunday (it was open). El Moro
is indeed closed, however.
