The question has never been "will he do a 7th tour." That's in his contract
with Discovery that has been well publicized.

The question is, this year or next year.

All that bluster and in the end just a smoke and mirrors show from LA and
his minions. Was there ever a doubt he would show up for 2005? All that
talk about hour record, spring classics, wants to accomplish other things,
etc. so much hot air. This guy has mastered the communications aspect even
before he signed up Discovery Channel. I guess as long as it ain't broke
he'll beat the familiar path for another year all the while lowering

And he'll do an 8th too. Let's be realistic, he really can't do
anything else. Remember that's what his ex-wife found out. If he isn't the

I knew it with the same degree of certainty as many of his competitors who
have gone on record as saying that it was nearly inconceivable that he would
miss the Tour this year. I don't think anyone in their right mind would
seriously think that he would wait until 2006 and ride the classics to win
this year. Many people, myself included, would have liked to see him do the
monuments this year plus Amstel. I'll bet Boogaard is disappointed.
George, Max and the classics crew at Discovery are probably happy with the
decision.

I really did hope to see Lance shoot for Flanders, Amstel and then the
Vuelta. It just looked to me from watching the Tour last year that he
really loved that stage on the cobbles. I'd love more than anything to see
him really take his best shot at Flanders.

I also thought it would be neat to have a new defending Tour champion going
into 2006. Then it would be Lance against the defending champ. Instant
motivation. Instant interest. As it is, I wouldn't bet on Lance to win
this year (or even finish). How could he be that motivated?

But at least now we can look forward to SOME cycling coverage in the run-up
to the Tour. I guess we'll have The Lance Commercials and Road to the Tour
and stuff like that. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz.

Not to ramble on here, but how will OLN reconcile itself with Discovery
Channel? What will they do without Al Trautwig? Is it true that Kirstin
Gum (or whatever he name was) got swept away in the tsunami? Enquiring
minds want to know.

Ullrich is happy that Lance is planning to compete for the Tour win
this year. J.U. Der Kaiser always been saying he really hopes LANCE
will be there. My guess would have been 50-50 that Lance lines up; now
it's certain. 🙂

Maybe Merckx (his not-so-subtle recent statements) had something to do
with this?

So, will OLN be printing money for their stateside live broadcasts?

I think it became apparent that withn the current team there are no
fewer than three guys who have as good, if not a better, chance at
winning the monuments this year and that if Lance decided to induldge
his desire to compete in the classics he would be giving a huge f-u to
the people on the team who focus on the classic....sorry Roger you're
riding for Lance now. Not the best way to build a team and I think
Lance realized that.

TDF in July and the hour in septemeber....Hopefully.

Well, he says that he will ride Flanders. One would expect him to ride to
win much as he rode L-B-L in 2003. IMO, he could have won that with
diffrent tactics. He'll give Flanders his best shot. It's early enough for
him to peak at the right time for the Tour.

IIRC, OLN still has a year to go on thier contract with ASO. Perhaps
they'll cut some kind of a deal with Discovery. If it's a good race, I'll
buy a DVD---which is to say if Armstrong loses or has a real battle on his
hands.

Well, "taking part in" and riding to win are pretty different. As the
article states, last time he finished 59th. I watched my tape of that
broadcast just the other day during my roller session and, though Lance said
he'd be wherever George was, he wasn't. George needed him in the last 10k
and he wasn't there.

For Germans, the one and only "Kaiser" is Franz Beckenbauer, former

All you guys going on about how OLN has a problem with Discovery must
not get a steady dose of sports on cable. ESPN alone is either on or
showing other cable channels on a constant basis. Hell, Comcast
advertises on Dish and vice versa, and those are real competitors.

I don't think OLN really cares. Discovery is sold in the lower end
package anyway and OLN would love to join them, rather than the next
to last niche package, just before you order Spanish-language
football.

BTW, if anyone wants to talk about drugs, what the hell are the
English and Spanish football/soccer announcers on? They seem to be
either on speed or depressants and nothing in-between.

I am half German and always think of either Hindenberg or Ullrich when
I hear "Der Kaiser."
Beckenbauer... I barely heard of him.

I went to a pro soccer match at the huge Hamburg stadium once, guess
what the fnial score was?
Nil - nil! Never ever witnessed a more boring sport. That was my
first
soccer experience. There were 50,000 fans there too.
