How does powder coating differ to regular frame refinishing ? I don't
mean the actual process I mean how does the finish differ ?
Regular frame refinishing involves "enamel" paint while powder
coating involves a powder that becomes liquid at elevated
temperatures,basically powder coating is more durable than
paint but the finish is (can be) not quite so good.

Not strictly true. There are basically four types of paint:
Normal domestic paint. This is a suspension in a solvent. As the solvent
evaporates the paint cures. The chemical reactions involved don't lead to a
particularly hard paint so this is not really suitable for applications like
bike frames (I'd reckon that Jon can easily leave marks in his recumbent's
paint job with a fingernail).
2. Epoxy paints. Expensive but good. Mix two parts and a chemical reaction
occurs. Much like araldite. This is then painted onto the surface before it
sets. This technology is used on the Forth rail bridge.
The other two are variants.
3. stove enamelling. A paint is applied, much like in 1. but the reactions
can be augmented by heat curing to give a hard finish.
4. Powder coating. A powder is applied to a surface, sometimes using
electrostatic bonding. This can be melted in a stove and gives a smooth,
hard finish.
The main difference between 3 and 4 is the method of applying the paint; the
heat curing is essentially the same.
As far as finish goes, with any paint you have to rub down with a very fine
grit to get the bumps out. This is hard work with hard finishes and not
always neccesary unless you want a mirror like finish.
The quality of a paint job depends primarily on the surface preparation. It
is also dependent for longevity on the integrity of the coat.
So far with the bike, the powder coating seems very tough. I'll still buy a
chainstay protector though to minimise the damage there.
