I went into an LBS on my way home from work the other day. Small, been going about 2 years, rather too few road bikes for my taste, but what the heck, I thought, I'll give it a go.
I'm on the lookout for a dynamo hub buitl into a 700C Mavic rim. I was hoping to chat over various options with the owner, but no "we don't build wheels."
Is this a common feature of bike shops? I was a bit gob smacked.

I'd be gobsmacked too. What sort of an LBS is that? However, it shouldn't be too difficult to do it yourself.

They should all be able to true wheels and replace the odd broken spoke, but I think many of them send orders for complete builds out to a local specialist. They should at least have been able to point you to the nearest good wheel builder, even if they didn't want to make a mark-up on the job themselves.

No, it isn't. Use a proper bike shop.
Thought not. A further clue was gained when he said he could enquire if he could get one in from his supplier. He started taking notes: "Shimano dynamo hub, right, is that cassette or freewheel?"

was this the old Action bikes Tim?
No, the hairy mechanic there (don't know his name) builds a fair wheel. This was the Horley Cycle Centre, near the Kings Head in, err, Horley.

Oh yes that place. Had a look there once, definitely not the sort of place I would expect to do much else than assemble bikes from boxes. I think they had one road bike. He obviously does good trade though given the local competition (Evans, Half**s and now Tesco).

I've never come across that. But, then, I have only had wheels built at a small number of places. IMV, once you find someone who you can trust to build the wheel, stick with them.
