Whats the point of shelling out hundreds of dollars for a dedicated GPS unit or cycling computer when a smartphone app can supposedly do it all? Are we really that attached to our Garmin Edges and Wahoos that we cant consider the possibility that a smartphone app can offer the same features and functionality? I mean, lets be real, most of us are already carrying our phones with us on rides anyway, so why not just use that?
And dont even get me started on the mapping capabilities of these devices. Ive seen some of the maps on these GPS units and cycling computers, and theyre laughable. Youd think theyd at least be able to rival Google Maps, but nope. So, is there a smartphone app out there that can offer advanced mapping features, live traffic updates, and turn-by-turn directions, all while tracking our ride data and providing real-time analytics? Or are we just stuck with mediocre devices that cant keep up with the technology were already carrying in our pockets?
