  1. Hello,

    I'm 32 years old, 5'9 in height, and weigh 265. I've been
fat most of my life and have never been active. Basically,
I'm sick of feeling like a disgusting blob of bloated flesh
and want to get in shape. I've tried various physical
fitness activities and the only two that really appealed to
me were solitary ones, specificially bodyweight calisthenics
and jogging. I mean, these really whipped my fat ass, but I
really, really enjoyed them. Felt great afterwards.

Anyway. would starting a walk/run/walk/run type of daily
regime be safe for someone in my current physical condition?
Eventually, I'd love to do a daily 3-5 mile run. Opinions?

    Thanks!

  2. I've started following the "training plan" spelled out in
    coolrunning.com181.shtml they call
it their "couch to 5k training plan". I'm 51, 5'10'' and
    235. I used to run a lot 25 years ago, and want to get back
into it. I do however, do a lot of hiking and weight
training; and have for quite a while.

But I think that this plan will help you. It's been working
well for me. One thing, go to a running store, not a
discount store, and get some good shoes for the "heavier
    runner". Makes a big difference.

Wish you the best... don't be in a hurry...stick with it.

    Pat

  3. NOOOOOOOOOO.

You are way overweight and it would be dangerous for you
to run. Not only would their be way to much stress on
your muscles and joints, but running at that weight is a
good way to leave this earth the Powerbar Brian Maxwell
way -- in an instant without even knowing what hit you.
You need to lose weight desperately and any type of
exercise you do should involve some way of dieting and
    staying away from food.

Take a bus somewhere in the middle of a forest 15 miles
from civilization where there is absolutely no way of
obtaining food -- No stores or restaurants or anything.
Then hike back home. It might take you 8 hours to do but
at least during all that time you won't come in contact
with even a crumb of bread. Do walks/hikes at meal times
so that instead of eating you will be out hiking. The
object is to trick your body into forgetting it's hungry.

This "advice" crosses the line from being merely wrongheaded
to being frankly sociopathic. Mac, there is an NG whose
regulars will welcome you with open arms, but I'd wager it
won't be this one. Go join "Lady Veteran," "Napalm Raider",
et al. at Soc.support.fat-acceptance. Over a hundred of
their posts leaked onto here in a mega-thread a couple weeks
ago, and I assure you, your brand of "a-little-knowledge-is-a-dangerous-
thing" is just what they appreciate over there. When you
couple your learning disorder with your severe delusions of
mediocrity, with your penchants for denial and
prevarication, and with your language handicap, you've
really got their number. Besides, given what you've said
above, fat-acceptance seems right up your alley, as does a
    true hostility to exercise.

  5. Hello I think it is a very good idea for you to get started
doing some exercise. There are however some precautions to
be taken before you can do as much as you want to. Here are
    my advices!

    1. Begin by going on a diet (doesn't have to be much, you
lose quite a lot quite fast when you exercise) and walk
several times a week (maybe as much as an hour or more),
because as mentioned by others, running is hard on your
joints, and you don't want to ruin the project before it
    has even started.

    2. When you feel that plain walking is to boring or simply
not hard enough (you should feel like exercising when you
do you walks!) you switch to a run/walk program (you find
these in magazines and on the net, that is not hard,
maybe runners world is a good place to start!!)

    3. Take your time, for you to get in shape to run say 3
miles takes time and a lot of patience, it may take 1.5 -
2 years or more (depends on how your body reacts to the
exercise), but then you will be fit to take up even more
    training...

    Good luck

    Erik

Go for it! Start slow build as you can.

here's a good non-running workout since you mentioned you
like that kind of workout. It's desiged to get young men
ready to attempt to become US Navy Seals. Use your judgement
    on the sit ups.

  7. Sure. Just dont rush it and allow yourself six months to get
up running a continuous 20 minutes.

I suggest five 20 minute fast-walking sessions a week at
some pleasant outdoors site. The third week start mixing in
one minute jogs. Switch back to walking when you get winded.
Then gradually increase the running parts over the weeks.
Try for 20 minutes rather than any distance. The first week
maybe you just go a half mile. Then when you can walk fast
the whole time, you'll reach a mile in 20 minutes. Then with
contnous jogging you'll be doing two miles in 20 minutes.

You've gotten good advice on the various run-walk programs,
etc. The only thing I'll add is: (a) in my experience, the
"improvement curve" as a an overweight runner is a bit
slower than for someone who is already height/weight
proportionate; (b) do not expect an appropriately modest
running program to lead to quick, dramatic weight loss. If
you can couple it with some sensible dietary modifications
    and a cross-training regimen of lower-impact aerobic
activity and/or strength training, you can expect somewhat
faster results. (c) if you can find natural surface trails
to run on, it will be easier on your joints, and asphalt is
easier than concrete. Stay off concrete sidewalks if you
can, in other words (d) negative self-talk is very defeating--
think about your positive future and don't waste mental
energy beating yourself up about what you don't like about
    the present.

Rick's got the best advice, transition from walking to
running over a long period of time will help the weight, AND
help make running more enjoyable for the long term. And it
is long term health that is a great goal/benefit of running.

By "get winded", Rick means that you are breathing hard
enough that you cannot talk in a near normal conversational
manner. If you look at some other references, you may see it
    called: "conversational pace".

The only other minor suggestion I'd add is: find a friend to
go with on occasion. Even a couple times a months, it can be
a great motivator to getting you out there running by having
    some one waiting for you.

Welcome to running. Hope you enjoy it!!! Ed

  10. when i began exercising i started walking for a month or so.
When i felt ready that is when i began jogging. Now, what i
do is run 2.6 miles 5 days a week and i time myself.
Everytime i run i try to beat my past time. This is how i
    stay in shape.

Do what you enjoy and will stick with, whether it is
    aerobics, swimming whatever.

Exercise will be a vast improvement over nothing as long as
you consult with your physician. But is should be safe for
you to take a 20 minute walk during the day if you don't
    have any heart conditions.

Start slowly but consistantly. Don't expect to run 3 miles
in the first month. You'll be doing more harm than good by
doing too much at the start. Keep walking and every once in
a while jog for a block. Sooner or later you'll be able to
jog 2 blocks and so on. Once you get to jogging more than
walking take the time to find a good pair of running shoes
    at a non-chain running store.

    Enjoy, Andy
