  1. Are observations of MFW's decline into the mundane, as a forerunner of
the possibility of total collapse, premature?

Indications to the affirmative include the almost daily reduction in
the number of posts submitted, and the absence of a number of regular
    contributors.

What cannot be denied is the dramatic change in the dynamics of the
Group, for whatever reason, which has changed input from the
abrasively eccentric to the most ordinary boringly repetitive!!

Have the former 'leading lights' been beaten at their own game, and
gone off to other forums to try to throw their weight around?

Shall we ever know the truth, or see its like again?

Have a great weekend folks; I'm having an enforced break from the diet
for the next few days - so it's obvious yet again that I intend to!!

Only being a reader of MFW for 8 months I can't really comment on its
change (which must have happened) over time. Your post does however
mirror other changes I have seen on the net over the years. We started
#41plus on efnet in '91 or '92. I was only 40 then. Over the years the
regulars moved on and a few call in from time to time. I was a founder
of another top 6 IRC network some years back but even that now doesn't
attract to much of my attention. Even my ISP is talking about dumping
their news server as it soaks up a Terra byte or more of downloads (for
them) a day and most is never used and dumped sometime later. It seems
that a new generation is now into forums, MSN, ICQ etc. The magic has
worn off for most of us "older" netizens.

However, like the Web, this group has some spring water, every now and
again, hidden within the sewer which will keep me coming back. I am
still in sponge mode and trying to learn all I can.

On a good day this has to be the best newsgroup in Usenet, but we are

The ultimate decline is when trolls like Hudson here make MFW his own
personal whining/gossip forum. Talk about filling up the group with
meaningless [censored]. Add the whacko, political extremists, it becomes an
    unsavory place for almost anyone.

I still continue conversations and projects offline.

For Hudson to [censored] about the decline of MFW is the ultimate irony. He
personifys the trivilization of everything imaginable. And is, no dougt, a
major factor is the decline of wextern civilization.

What cannot be denied is the dramatic change in the
dynamics of the Group, for whatever reason, which has

Have the former 'leading lights' been beaten at their

That is nothing new, and it is something which has occurred
since the inception of this newsgroup. The perceived
decline is actually a result of people ignoring him, no
    matter how persistently he trolls.

    Quoted message said:

There are ways to deal with that, Lee, but if people
don't like it, they have to do something more than just
[censored] and moan. Actually, there seem to be two varieties
    of political extremists:

[a] those who end up in MFW after cross-posting from
political newsgroups (most recently, can.politics), and

[b] those like Henry Hansteen, who intentionally post
off-topic political messages and morph their email
addresses to avoid killfiles, all in the deluded belief
that they can effect political change by annoying people.

As to the latter, I have already posted the solution. In
Henry's case, I really do believe that if a number of
people complained to Cornell University about his practices,
they would do something about it. To respect his right to
free speech, they might just tell him to limit his posts to
the appropriate newsgroups, which would serve the desired
purpose for MFW, but Henry would hate that, and if he
continued his practices, and if MFW readers readers
continued to complain, they would eventually suspend his
Usenet privileges, since his purpose would clearly be one
of harassment. If people really want him to stop doing this
(as opposed to them simply engaging in gratuitous [censored]
and moaning), they will eventually seek such a solution.

As to the cross-posted ranters, the simple solution is to
post a single response to their post with MFW clipped from
the distribution. They'll continue ranting and raving in
their chosen political newsgroup, and if you don't read
that newsgroup, it will be as though they disappeared.
If they then add MFW back into the distribution, you can
complain to their ISP about them intentionally cross-posting
inflammatory, off-topic messages into an inappropriate
    newsgroup.

I know: nobody wants to be a netcop. But if you really
think it's a problem, you need to do something more than
    just complaining publicly.

That he is a primary cause of that decline, is as you say, the ultimate
irony. It's like Neal Fabian saying it, etc. That like so many trolls,
he has to now use another name (which I also ignore now) to get people
to respond to the trolling, is all the more typical and sad.

The ultimate decline is when trolls like Hudson here make
MFW his own personal whining/gossip forum.

That is nothing new, and it is something which has occurred
since the inception of this newsgroup. The perceived
decline is actually a result of people ignoring him, no
    matter how persistently he trolls.

Which is why he had to use the oldest of troll tricks: when enough
people ignore you, change your name.

The "perceived decline" is an absolute fact if you care to check the
criteria I offered in support of my assertion.

I am only ignored by those that can't compete with me, which has been
