Curt,
If you aren't reading this newsgroup via a newsgroup reader that can hide
posts from jerks, make the change. It will do wonders for your enjoyment of
the newsgroup.
I've seen a huge drop off in traffic here these past couple months partially
because of the end-of-college invasion of the trolls, and partly because
far too many regulars on this newsgroup predictably respond to every troll
posting with flurries of their own which encourage the trolls to keep up
their destructive posting. There have also been so many off topic posts
that aren't marked OT that I have found myself reading only a handful of
posts where the topic is clearly diet related. If a regular like me has cut
way back on reading, I imagine that most newbies make one visit and never
come back again.
It's a shame. There is a tremendous amount of information to be had from
people here when they do stay on topic.
Support is important, the people who make it sound like weight control is
easy are almost always people who have not yet experienced metabolic
problems and who erroneously believe that the ease they've experienced in
controlling their weight means that people who can't achieve their results
are lazy gluttons.
I was young once and had a relatively healthy metabolism that made weight
control relatively easy. I used to think that people who "let themselves go"
were lazy gluttons too. Now I have a metabolic condition that makes it
insanely hard to control weight and I am a lot more humble. I no longer
assume that other people are weak imbeciles when they have problems with
something that I find easy.
I suppose from that perspective, since my mental health is still pretty
good, I should be able to work up some empathy for the kind of person whose
mental imbalances make it necessary for them to strike out at strangers, day
after day, with no concern about the impact of that kind of behavior, in a
manner that shows a seriously troubling pattern of obsessive repetition and
lack of any signs of intellectual activity.
But mostly I just killfile them and ignore any thread where people,
illadvisedly, respond.

Quoted message said:Lately I have been having some bad days. Drinking beer is the worst thing
for me and it changes my whole outlook. Anyway, I like to come here for
support...this being a support group. I find that I don't want to ask for
help here anymore because if you do JC sniffs out a person that is feeling
down and tries to put him/her down further. I guess he does this to prop
himself up?
Anyway, I have not been doing all that great, but hope to turn the corner
tomorrow. I have not gained that much, but if I continue I will be going
back to an old weight.
Thanks for listening,
Curt
