  1. All,

I'm starting to think about the possibility of doing another IM in 2007 and
with the demise of Pineman and the Blue Devil I'm wondering about the
long-term status of all IM races. Granted, worrying about such things so
far out is somewhat silly, but my wife and I tend to travel around the
eastern US quite a bit on business and I'd like to put several race sites on
my itenerary for a quick look before registration opens for the 2007 races
    in the summer of 2006.

Obviously, IM North America can be counted on to be around, but can any
given race? For example, I know that IMNA tends to sign 5 year deals with
cities to host their races and I notice that the 2006 IM Wisconsin event
will be the 5th year in Madison. Has anyone seen anything about extending
the deal to beyond 2006? Similarly, IM Utah was only held in Salt Lake for
1 year so I have the same question about any and all IM races.

Basically, I don't want to waste time visiting Madison, Lake Placid, or
Panama Beach to preview the course this spring if the race won't be at the
same site in '07. So, has anyone seen any information about the status of
ANY of the ironman races (Mdot and otherwise) for 2007 and beyond?

IMFL in PCB has been rumored to be moving for the last three years. No
idea if the rumors will ever turn out to be true.

  3. to me worrying that far out is NOT silly; I'll never be fast enough to
get a qualifying spot, and it will take long-term planning for me to
ever make an IM. My problem right now is degenerative disc disorder:
five are deteriorating at an increasing pace, and I wonder if I'll be
able to hack the long distance run in 18 to 24 months.

Well it can always be worse; my running is really fading but I still
love that bike... pedal my buns off whenever I get the chance.

  4. Heard the same rumors re: PCB and IM, and yet the race sold out in 3
hours. Seems like a good relationship between the locals and IMNA, at
least from all appearances race week. IM brings in a nice chunk of
money during what is typically a very slow period on the Gulf Coast,
and again it doesn't appear that there is any hesitation from anyone
with regards to racing down there if you can judge anything from how
quickly this race has sold out.

As for the OP, can't really say much about what has been heard
regarding 2007 venues though again it doesn't appear any of them are in
trouble at the moment. Anything could happen between municipalities
and the IMNA organization, though, so nothing is a guarantee....but at
this point I would bet decent money all of the IM's you mention will be
in their same location in '07 and for several years beyond.

    Because I can. ;-)

In a word: training. Obviously (I hope) the biggest issue is the bike
course. You can only tell so much by a course profile. For me personally,
it's an issue that I live in central Ohio which is pretty damn flat. I can
find hills if I go looking for them, but I wouldn't want to train for 6-9
months on flat roads and then be surprised by the bike course.

When I did the Blue Devil, I took the time to drive the bike course about a
year before the race (wasn't a big deal - I have a friend who lived in
Raleigh and I was there anyway). Based on that preview I added a detour
through a river valley to my most convieient and most frequent bike training
route. That detour included about 10 miles of rolling hills which I knew
closely approximated the hills found at the BD. I rode that course for
almost a year (it was out of my way, if I was only doing local races in Ohio
I wouldn't have bothered) and it worked out beautifully as the BD course
turned out to be surpisingly "easy" compared to the written accounts I'd
    seen from others.

Did the same thing for the Blue Devil run course - which killed a lot of
people. If I decide to do Wisconsin, I'll probably go find some local hill
that looks somthing like Old Sauk Pass - or whatever. But, the decision on
which race to do is open. I'm considering all of them.

I often find even firsthand accounts to be highly subjective. In a
perfect world, you can have local access to varied terrain, without
much commuting. Then, you will may a sense for the technique or
frame-of-mind to shift into on race day.

I am handicapped by lack of persistent flat terrain in my area. IMO,
riding fast on flat terrain for extended periods is an often overlooked
skill; I am not very good at it.

It'd be nice, but I wouldn't pay for a special trip just to see the
    course a year in advance.

Agreed, but if you look at my initial post carefully I noted that my wife
and I both travel a lot for business so we're likely to end up pretty close
to most race sites sometime between now and race day.

I probably wouldn't either, but I thought the original post said he was
going to be in the area anyhow. I just got back from a trip and if I were
planning to do any races in the areas I was travelling thru I probably would
have made a point to see if I could look over the course while I was there.

I thought he said he didn't want to make the trip if the course was
going to change, but I'm too lazy to dig up the original post.
