    Antioxidant defense of the midgut epithelium by the peritrophic

    The peritrophic envelope (PE) is an extracellular matrix that is
    secreted by the midgut epithelium in most arthropods. In addition to
    protecting the midgut epithelium from abrasive food particles and
    microbial pathogens, in vitro experiments have suggested that the PE
    functions as a radical-scavenging antioxidant in caterpillars. This
    study tested the hypothesis that the PE is a "sacrificial antioxidant"
    in vivo in caterpillars. As a sacrificial antioxidant, the PE would (1)
    bind catalytic metal ions, (2) become oxidized itself, and (3) protect
    the midgut epithelium from oxidative damage. Each of these functions
    was supported by our results: the PE in Malacosoma disstria adsorbed
    increased amounts of iron as the concentration of iron was increased in
    its diet. Iron adsorption by the PE helped protect the midgut
    epithelium of M. disstria from oxidative damage over a wide range of
    ingested iron concentrations. Secondly, while the midgut epithelium was
    protected, protein oxidation in the PE increased 108% when tannic acid
    was oxidized in the endoperitrophic space. Finally, when the formation
    of the PE was inhibited by Calcofluor, protein carbonyls in the midgut
    epithelia of M. disstria and Orgyia leucostigma increased by two- to
    threefold. We conclude that the PE functions as an effective
    iron-binding and radical-scavenging antioxidant that protects the
    midgut epithelia of caterpillars.

    Let me get this straight. First they say we Crohnies are to
    eat parasitic worms. Now they want us to add in a side
    order of caterpillars and our guts should then stay in
    remission? Sounds ever so yummy! 🙂

  3. I think what might be happening is .. if one were to extrapolate the
    gut of the caterpillar to the gut of a human .. the gut in the
    caterpillar is 'protected' by the 'film' .. PE .. and when this is
    oxidized by .. iron .. the 'ability' to 'protect' the gut .. is
    diminished / destroyed.

    So in essence when the 'film' in a person with IBD / IBS is either
    missing or destroyed .. the gut is no longer protected by the 'film'..
    and you get DESTRUCTION of flesh / gut lining ..

    This theory is given a bit of credence when one looks at the recent
    studies which show phytic acid , a natural iron binder , has
    anti-inflammatory / anti-ulcer effects .. and ALSO deferoxamine ANOTHER
    ... iron .. binder .. ?

    The fact one piece of white bread contains about a gram of iron .. ?

    These results suggested that gastro-protective effect of PA could be
    mediated by its antioxidant activity and cytoprotection of gastric

    No, no, you misread it. I think it says that your gut won't get rusty if you
    eat more iron -- but only if you're a caterpillar. If it wasn't for the

  5. Careful using those big words like extrapolate. I used it once and some
    people in my fan club got really confused by it.

    Anyway, the interesting thing to me is the idea that the epithelial layer is
    protected by... well something. Therefore the corrolary is that without
    whatever is protecting it it can be compromised. I have previously surmised
    that one possible mechanism by which the gut becomes inflammed is when the
    epithelial is compromised by different things in the diet. One good example
    is the type of IBD caused by NSAIDS.

    I have also noticed that certain foods or drink seem to exascerbate my
    symptoms. I can only conclude from that that these substances somehow
    compromise the epithelial layers and possibly expose them to bacterial
    infection. That theory received a lot of negative attention when I first
    proposed it. But if humans are not totally different from our multi-legged
    friends then we too must have some protective mechanisms which keep our
    intestines from being broken down or invaded by pathogens. So if these
    mechanisms are compromised - well, it just may be one of the etiological
    factors for IBD.

    If normal eating equals gut pain, what does eating creepy,
    crawly things equal? Pain in the stomach from throwing it
    all back up? Fun, fun, fun... can't wait to get some.

    I ride [censored] when on a bike, so it won't be me eating bugs. :P

    Seriously, I can't ride anymore after 3 head on car wrecks
    thru my life. No way my back is gonna let me ride, so these
    days when asked what kind of bike I have, I tell them I ride
    a tricycle. Always fun to watch the reactions I get.

    Now I'm off to nurse this low grade fever that's decided to
    grace me with it's presence the past couple of days making
    me feel 'yucky'. (I still think that should be classified a
    true medical term, it says so well what we feel. LOL.)
