It was very uncomfortable, my ass was sore for a week.

No, I ran, skipping looks too gay.
I have an iRiver at it doesn't skip but instead of taking 1 or 2 seconds
between songs it will take 10 to 15. Also it doesn't play all of the songs
as normal but will skip entire folders.

I've had that happen occasionally. I use the SportSuit carrying
case/strap from Marware. I seem to have more problems if the iPod
sits on the front of my arm (like directly over my bicep), but if I
scoot it around to the side of my arm, it seems to go away. It seems
to happen after 20 minutes or so--the iPod has pretty long skip
protection, but after constant jiggling for that long...
I've also ended up taking it off the strap and just carrying it for
the last mile or so of my run, which reduces the bouncing...

An iPod is a hard-drive based device. It will not skip, but if there is
enough shock the hard drive will fail.
If you are really talking about an iPod, don't run with it. The hard drive
inside is not unlike the one in a laptop (somewhat smaller) and won't handle
the shock. If you're talking about a Mini, the hard drive in there is a
Microdrive (or something similar). You're still taking a chance, but the
overall lightness of the unit makes it better in terms of shock, for
running.
I definitely wouldn't run with a 20 or 40GB iPod. You will ultimately damage
it.

I must agree with this. I ran with a 30GB iPod once and it really played
havoc with it. After much care and re-loading it now works fine, but don't
strap it on and go. I have found that there are absolutely no problems if
you hold it in your hand while running, but this is awkward for harder or
longer runs.

I use a 30gb Creative Zen Xtra myself, housed in a neoprene belt designed
for aerobics instructor microphones. It does start to skip, after about
10-15 minutes continuous running. It'll be quiet for about 20 secs, and
then it's good for about another 10-15 minutes.
In the interest of full disclosure, Creative does not recommend jogging or
doing other types of high-impact activity while using the Zen. I would
agree with that. However, I can't afford to buy another MP3 player just for
running, so I'll be switching to a radio instead in the near future. Due to
that fact, and other boneheaded design mistakes with the Creative, I
certainly can't recommend purchasing a Zen for any reason. Even though it's
$100 cheaper than the Ipod, you get what you pay for, and the Zen is a
steaming P.O.S....
The Ipod mini looks like it might be the deal if you can afford such
expensive toys. Even has an armband holder available for it. The
microdrive in the mini should be much more resistant to the constant
movement involved in running.

H.
When Celine Dion is all you listen to, does it really matter if it
skips?
Au contraire mon frere...the Zen is not a steaming POS. It will become a
steaming POS if the operator is a steaming POS to begin with and uses it to
run. The Zen actually uses an identical HD to a laptop. You surely wouldn't
go running with you laptop bouncing around on your waist, would you? Well,
maybe you would if you were a steaming POS...
The Zen and its HD are too heavy to run with. Too much shock for the player,
and for you, the steaming POS too. The Zen is a fine piece of kit if you use
it for what is was meant.
In the Creative line, the Muvo2 is quite nice and has a MicroDrive inside
that is much, much lighter so it can handle the shock. I have used the Rio
Nitrus before without incident. The Mini falls into this category as well.
Obviously, if you use a flash-based player you won't even have to think
about this, but the max for those right now (with expansion card) is about a
gig.

No skips. But, the hard disk will crash. When that happens,
the whole unit dies and the only thing left to do is to throw
it in the trash.

I regularly run with my iPod, but have to hold it in my hand or strap
it to the back of my hand with the armband. Anywhere else, including
the upper arm causes it to skip. Clipped to the waist or in a
waistpack is the worst.

I did a search on this topic at iPod Lounge
(http://www.ipodlounge.com) which is a good source of, well, iPod
info. Some people recommended carriers that might reduce the bouncing
around and hence, the skipping. I'm not associated with any of these,
just thought I'd pass the URLs along. First, the thread I found on
iPod lounge is here (I think you have to be a registered user of their
site, though):
http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17896&highlight=running
or
They recommended the following products (again, no association...just
trying to help):

HTH,

The Amphipod is the shee-ot.
I'd still get a Mini or the new Rio Carbon if you're thinking about running.
