iPAQ outdoor case

Aquapacs are completely waterproof, but only provide light padding and
are a bit fiddly to undo outdoors (the clamps have to be disassembled

Pelicases are crushproof as well, but stop you using the touch screen
and are more bulky/heavier than an aquapac.

Probably best to try before you buy. The Aquapacs can be found in marine
suppliers (and I think I've seen them in Maplin). The pelicases can
sometimes be found in professional photographic suppliers (I don't
know where you're located but KP in Cambridge have them).

The Otterboxes that Dominic suggested look like the best of both
worlds, but I don't know where you can try them.

Peliproducts are based near Glossop if you are ever in the area. They
are very friendly and helpful.

Indeed that is the tricky bit. I have hear enthusiastic reports from
across the pond but have not seen one...

If you want something that will probably survive being dropped in a
river and stepped on with a boot a Peli micro case box is a possible
candidate. If you want something that will survive your rucksack being
dropped in the river, and probably survive being sat on, then the
"Lock & Lock" series of hermetically sealing fridge, freezer, and
microwave boxes are extremely good and amazingly cheap.

If your device is also sensitive to damp, condensation, etc., you
might like to consider making the box big enough to accomodate a nice
big bag of silicon drying "crystals". You don't need a big bag to *keep*
things dry, but in cold wet conditions you need a big bag to dry
things out.

This may seem obvious, but apart from the 'tuff' bit a normal map case
should keep it dry and also allow you to read the screen.

Haven't tried using the touch screen in one, though.

I use 2 different types of case depending on intended use, IPAQ 2210.

Aquapac PDA Wallet

Can still use the HP extended battery with either.

Aquapac is MUCH smaller, and approx half the price of the Otter. It's been
used in constant drizzle, with no ill-effects to the IPAQ. I find it easier
to use than the Otter.

The Otterbox, OTOH, is a considerably different beastie, VERY bulky,
expensive, not as easy to stow, but, if you think you'll need it, buy it.
The elemental and physical protection it offers is worth the asking price
IMHO.
