Me too. Last year I rode with my daughter and we scraped in
with minutes to spare.

This year I'll be with my 12 year old son and we'll probably
do the shorter 'family' route as we will be riding 50 miles
on the Saturday before and also on the Monday after. We are
staying in Sandown.

Might be on the Trice or possibly the Bike-6666-Friday.

You have just solved my problem of what to do on that weekend.

Live in southampton so i will catch a ferry in the morning. What is the terrain like? I was supposed to be doing the 3 day TT event on the island but have had to pull out.
So a leisurely training ride will do just the job.

even attempt the 30k... Threaten to take part every year,
however the thought of cycling extra miles to register when

Its mixed with some nasties. The route goes clockwise this
year so if starting from Cowes it will be rolling lanes for
the first few miles followed by the tough hills around
Whitwell. Along the SW section it can be exceptionally hard
if the wind is off the sea. From Yarmouth back to Cowes it
is fairly flat, so hope for a tailwind finish.

I think that some of the route is the same as the TT course.

AFAIK yes. In 1998 I took my Kingcycle over from Southampton
for the race in Ryde, and while the other poor sods were
talking of spending seventy or eighty quid to cross the
water with vans or cars, it cost me about six quid return...

In the past, there's been a check-in on the 0800(?) ferry to
save all the faffing around with the chain ferry.

Is the course suitable for road bikes?

A standard road bike would be fine. Riders use all sorts of
machine from shoppers to 'bents with many making a full day
of it. Last year I saw a number of groups of 'roadies' using
the ride for training. The route is also very well
signposted - by permanent blue arrows.

Interesting point; had a chat with a bloke on the Fishbourne
ferry last year, apparently Islanders (which he was by
virtue of visiting his mum there every couple of weeks) only
pay about 1/5 of the standard ferry rate, subsidised by us
mainlanders. I don't personally have any problem with that
as it keeps most of the Island one of the few places in the
South East that is not full of MDG's every weekend.

Lots of hills seem to stick in my memory. Lots.

For us local mainlanders living on the coastal plains it was
a bit of a shock to discover so much verticalness just
across the water.

I've done it twice; 2 years ago on a solo going clockwise
and last year on a tandem (Dawes Double Edge, orange) going
anticlockwise.

Even allowing for tandem's dislike of hills, I'd say that
clockwise is the easier trip.

Go for it; it's a great ride. There's the fun of being among
lots of cyclists but none of the L2B hype. It remains full
of enthusiasts.
