Hello All;
I wonder if anyone remembers me? I first came to this newsgroup in April
of 2000, having just started on Atkins. Back then, I weighed 270 or so lbs
and I had reached the end of my rope. I felt better within days of starting
the plan, and I had much success with this WOL. I lost the weight steadily
and a little slowly, and after over a year at a size 12, I finally reached
my goal of size 10 jeans in the summer of 2003. In that 3 1/2 years, I
"cheated" only once; we were on a cruise, and we were invited to dinner at
the captains table and I just had to try Baked Alaska. What a
disappointment!
In the summer of 2002, my husband and I bought a Harley and I dyed my hair
red. In the summer of 2003, for my 39th birthday, my husband got me a pair
of leather pants that looked so good on me I could hardly stand it. A
mid-life crisis was just around the corner, and this is what happened; two
weeks after my 39th birthday, I discovered I was pregnant with my first
child! This was such a big surprise to us, as we thought we would never be
able to have a baby together.
Low-carbing lasted about 8 weeks into the pregnancy. I had been a smoker
for many years until I became pregnant, and quitting smoking along with the
emotional roller coaster ride of being pregnant made chocolate chip cookies
seem awfully f***ing good to me, so I had a sugar party through the whole
pregnancy and gained 100 pounds.
I gave birth to a healthy 11lb6oz boy (via C-section) in April 2004. He is
the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and being his mother is so much
more fun than I ever imagined it would be.
*However* I wasn't able to get into the mindset I needed to be in for the
last year or so, and am still only 20-25 lbs below the weight I was when I
had the baby. I am also breastfeeding him, which seems to make me hungrier
than I ever was before. Physically, I am at the end of my rope again. I
had started exercising at home with a DVD, and was having some success with
that, feeling better at least, but then the baby started having some serious
sleep issues, and I became sleep-deprived and couldn't make myself exercise
in the mornings (the only time I have the TV to myself).
5 weeks ago, I was getting ready to fix breakfast for the boy and myself,
and for some reason I just said "what the hell" to myself and made an omelet
instead of cereal or a bagel. I have been low-carb since that day, but I am
eating more fruit than I probably ought to, plus I broke down and had a
burger and fries last weekend when we were on the road and I let myself go
too long without eating to be able to make a good choice for myself.
I absolutely feel better. I have lost about 7 lbs in 5 weeks, with about 70
to go. I'll try not to dwell on that number. That seems so far away.
It's a little hard fixing meals for different appetites. When I did this
before, I was working in a restaurant, so it was much easier to get my meals
made for me. Now, I stay home and I'm in charge of dinner for a
hard-working hungry husband who wants potatoes or rice with almost every
dinner, a finicky 18 year old stepdaughter who doesn't like anything
remotely good for her, and a 14 month old boy who doesn't like vegetables.
Sometimes I just make what I want to eat and something for the baby, and if
they don't like it, they can get their own food! I have stopped buying
junk, so they have to get it on their own, and the girl child has lost a
couple of pounds as well.
So, thanks for reading along. I don't like talking about my diet with
people in real life for some reason, so this forum is a great place for
support and information and inspiration.
Cheers to you all;

I cook for myself and my housemate, and I always make a separate meal
for myself if what I made for him was not what I really wanted/needed.Cheers and good luck!
Oh, and if the kid likes meat, let him have it and don't worry about it.

Auntie Bubbles,Congrats on your wonderful surprise baby! I had one at the same age and
he's grown up now, amazingly enough. It sounds very likely to me that you may have had Gestational Diabetes.
Having a baby that large is considered a prime diagnostic sign. (9
lbs and over, in fact.)Pregnancy increase insulin resistance even in normal people. Late life
pregnancies are even more likely to do this. So since you probably have
an underlying blood sugar disorder, to start with, it isn't surprising
that during pregnancy your sugar balance went out of control.Remember that a prime symptom of intense insulin resistance is
remorseless hunger.A couple thoughts:
1. Keep breast feeding and don't obsess over your weight until you wean.
I gained 50 lbs when I was carrying my baby lineman and none of it
came off until he was weaned at which time I was able to get a complete
grip on the eating and got down to 135 lbs where I stayed for the next
ten years until menopause kicked in. Before I weaned, diet control
wasn't possible. Large babies have huge nutritional needs and weirdly I
found that supplying them did not take weight off me. I had GD, too.2. Low carbing should help with the hunger control after you wean. But
if it does not, and you continue to have intense hunger, it's time to
see an endocrinologist and see if you might benefit from a medication
that reduces insulin resistance--probably Metformin, which helps greatly
with hunger control and weight loss.If you had Gestational Diabetes you have a very high chance of
developing regular diabetes as you get older, but if you take agressive
steps to counter the Insulin Resistance, it might be very helpful.Enjoy your baby!!!!! They do grow up much faster than you'd believe.

in the normal range. Large babies are common in my family (many of them
over 10 lbs), but all the women who are over 40 and overweight have
developed diabetes. Some of them, however, have controlled thier weight and
do not have it, so I know what I have to do.Quoted message said:

group doesn't.That's a good point, plus it can get tiresome having your friends and family
looking over your shoulder and always asking "can you eat this" or "are you
allowed to have that?". I can take care of myself at parties etc. I don't
want to have to answer to anyone but myself about what I eat or make my

for me!
Nice to see your name again, Rudy!
