Interpret my training/tt test.

  1. After reading a thousand articles on the net, I decided to do a 10 mile tt and record my average heart rate, somebody had said that this would be my lactate threshold. Time was consistent with other times I've done and my ave heart rate was 155. I therefore based my winter training levels on this figure. I did a retest today and my ave heart rate was 165. Time was a little faster but nowhere near my best. So am I gainning? I'm confused, does a higher heart rate mean I've lost fitness or now that my threshold test is nearer my max heart rate does it mean I'm gainning.

    To me that means that you have ridden the TT at a higher heart rate (to hard to know the reason; perhaps you just tried harder or were warmer due to new/more clothes!) and you've ridden faster (which is positive).

    Why do YOU think your HR might have been different? Do YOU think you are fitter?

    Your TT HR isn't your HR at lactate threshold; but there's lots about that in this forum.

    As 2Lap mentions your avg HR during a 10m TT (or indeed any TT) is not your LT. LT is defined as a workload (power output in cycling) that elicits a 1mmol/L increase in lactate over exercise baseline levels (this would be ~ 2 point something mmol/L), or at a fixed 2.5 mmol/L. This is about 10 to 20% less than the power that you TT at for ~1-hr.

    All that the higher HR means is that your heart was beating at a faster rate, under the conditions involved. as we don't know the power you were producing, nor the environmental conditions (e.g., air density, barometric pressure, temps) or the topography of the course it would be impossible to conclude anything, other than your HR was faster.

    do you know what your HRmax is? and what it was at the time of the other test?

    Looks like this is only a thread for people residing or being from Wales... where about in the Rhondda are you? I'm in sunny Llantrisant!

    How's he going to measure that number. Anything over 4mml is considered above lactate threshold. If you're really serious about finding your threshold go to a lab and get blood tested or use the portable Accusport (I have for years and it is very accurate. Even tested it against the blood draw in the lab) Remember that the lactate threshold when measured against HR will improve with fitness. But you are trying to hit the threshold and the way you are doing it is a lot of guesswork. you could try the Conconi test, more accurate than what you are attempting and it does not require an invasive method although not as accurate.

    The Conconi test has been discredited and is of no use.

    I'm not sure what you're suggesting it's more accurate than?

    The point is that the LT is defined as 4mml of lactate in the blood. Every sports/physiology lab uses that as the standard, although there can be variance amongst individuals.

    The Conconi Test is a non invasive test that could be used to better determine his lactate threshold rather than guessing which is what he is doing. Yes, in some circles it has been discredited but Peter Janssen in his book "Lactate Threshold Training" does give it its due, in other words it can be used to get an idea of what your threshold is. However as I stated before the Accusport Lactate tester is a far better way to go and its portable can be used in the field

    But HR varies under different conditions at a given workload, it's the reason why HR monitors aren't as useful as power meters. For example at my TT power my HR can vary by ~ 15 b/min

    if he wants to know his LT then he needs to go to a lab... the point though is what use is it? LT is a fairly low intensity, ~ 10 - 20 % less power than the average that can be sustained during a 1-hr TT, thus, you can keep it going for several plus hours. Far more important though is to measure actual performance (i.e. TT power) and MAP (upper limit).

    in all scientific circles it's been discredited a while back. you can get a reasonable measure of your 'threshold' in much better ways.

    For e.g. if you want to know what your TT power is, it's approximately 75% MAP (full details see http://www.cyclingnews.com/fitness/?id=powerstern).

    if you want to know your TT power exactly, then go and ride a TT with a power meter

    if you want to approximately know what your HR is likely to be during a TT, either ride one (noting the conditions) or use about 90% HRmax

    on the other hand if youwant to know your LT then go to a lab
