Interesting flat

nail), and I don't know the victim, so I can't ask.

I suppose if you hit the head of the nail with the point pointing AWAY
(forward), it's conceivable that it would poke straight up and impale the
tire before it passed it. Has to be a fluke, though.

Many years ago I picked up a long nail in my front tyre which was
knocked out of the tyre by the mudguard ready to be picked up a second
time by the rear tyre. I only carried one spare tube so and no
puncture outfit so I had a long walk home.

(If you prefer you can read fender for mudguard, and yes I know I spell
tire funny. ;-) )

I can't answer your question but I had an even more bizarre flat. The
exact same type of 3 inch penny nail went into my rear tire, straight
in. I was going downhill at the time. It went around several times
before I could stop and actually wacked my rear brake loose.

That was a further mystery. It didn't damage the rear brake, just
knocked its mount loose.

Happened to me once too - a long, thick nail with a wide, flat head; in
the center and out the sidewall of the front tire. I thought at the
time, that my Mr. Tuffy had deflected the nail and bent it as it passed
through the tread, but I think it more likely that the nail was bent
before I ran over it so the path was a straight line through the tire,
coming to a stop when the "elbow" got to the rubber.

I don't know but driving home from camping one weekend a very dull 12mm open
end wrench gave our thick treaded bias-ply tire a flat. It was kind of
strange to pull over, get out, and see a wrench sticking out of the tire.

I had a three inch wood screw stick about a 1/2" into my
sidewall, perfectly parallel to the axle. It happened right
at the beginning of my ride, as I biked from my door to the
end of the sidewalk, at very low speed. I noticed it when
the screw began to bang against the stays.

It looked for all the world as if someone had screwed it in
with a screwdriver.

I went over some railroad tracks in my car and heard, "thump, thump,
thump, thump" for the next hundred yards. Pulled over, got out and
found a WOODEN survey stake about 6" deep into the center of my rear
right tire. The impaling end was touching the inside of the rim, it
went right through the steel belts. I figured some kids must have
propped it up on the tracks.

Probaby the nail was foolishly wearing a helmet, and the plasticising drag
effect of the helmet outer shell caused the pointy end to rise up when
ridden over, and thus into the tyre. :-)

I had something like that happen but the tire (tube really) didn't go
flat -- a long glass spike in one side of the tire, under the rubber
tread, and out about half inch away.

Once, a denizen of a.m-b fixed a flat and rode away only to feel thump,
thump, thump in the wheel. He stopped and in trying to get the tire off, he
noticed that he was missing a tire lever... *hilarity ensues*

Once, I got a flat and discovered a tiny unicorn jumping around inside my
tire, poking holes all over in the tube. I coaxed the little guy out and

I don't know how I did it, I rarely hit debris, and don't get very many
flats, but a couple of years ago I flatted and discovered a masonry nail
had gone through the tire and rim. The rim was a Mavic Open Pro double
wall. The nail went through the full cross section and was protruding
from the rim between the spokes. I'm still using the rim.
