original Mozilla source?

This shows Mozilla browsers and includes IE in that list.

Hmm, shows a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Maybe I should
stick to keeping servers running rather than worry about what people are
using to access them with.

After a bit more reading (ie. better look at the log) - it seems that
"Mozilla/4.0" is "MSIE 6.0". We are still not big MS fans, but it is
not as dramatic as I thought.

This is for hysterical raisins. Way Back When Netscape was the Big
Browser, a number of websites checked specifically for Netscape in the
User-Agent (by searching for "Mozilla"😉, and denied access if they
didn't see it. Microsoft got around that by using an agent string
similar to:

"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE XXXX)"

It's an old trick, and a particularly common one (eg: way back in the
early days of the IBM PC, the genuine IBM PC BIOS had the string "This
is a product of IBM corporation". Some programs scanned the BIOS for
"IBM", and refused to run if it wasn't found. So when Compaq reverse
engineered the BIOS, they included the string "This is not a product of
IBM corporation" (with appropriate disclaimers) in there somewhere.

posted a link to somewhere that gave stats on newsgroup usage, main
users etc. I think it was in the middle of a top-posting war (oops don't
go there). Anyone know what I'm talking about and where it was?

I think you will find Mediapartners-Google, means your site was visited by the mighty google search engine and has been recorded, probably obtained some information about your site as well, whatever was available in the headers.

That shows as Mozilla/5.0 as well:

That's the one, although it looks a bit suss that cyclingforums is all
time highest but not even in top 10 for this month. Must be because FD
was on holiday 🙂 .

January 2005 - 3239 posts to aus.bicycle. Cripes! Do the stats count stuff from cyclingforums? I'm around 830+ since 2003 and Dutchies count of 2,000+ is certainly in high earth orbit. 😄
