  1. After being on either Percocet of Vicadin for the past year or more, I've
become dependent and my doc has me going to a chemical dependency program
for people like me. I'm still in need of the pain meds but will soon need
(and want) to stop taking those meds. I have an appointment this Thursday
with a doc and an intake. I'm scheduled to start back to work on Monday and
told them so. They asked if I would be willing to take more time off of work
if necessary for the drug thing. I said yes. What immediately popped into my
head was "Well, I shouldn't try and cut out carbs now. It will be too much
to do both at the same time and I'll not succeed in either." I think this is
a rationalization for eating carbs. I've had no experience with this kind of
thing so I don't know what to expect, but I have heard that alcoholics and
drug addicts substitute sugar when recovering.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Am I going to crave sugar as they
    reduce the meds?

I know this is a weird subject but I would really appreciate any thoughts
    the group might have. TIA

  2. I wasn't on Percocet for that long from my surgery, but I had no sugar
cravings. Sugar cravings do come from use of opiates and then getting off
them, so I am not sure what will happen for you.

You are in a tough situation in some ways, but try to look at the positive
side of things. I try to make a negative into a positive any time I can.
You are on the right track. You are on your way to recovery! That is
great. Be happy about the future. I find it unlikely that you really need
Percocet now. Yes, you will start feeling your body again and it will have
pains and so on, but you do need to have that feeling back and pay your
dues, so your body knows what to do. You are masking your pain and your
body can't react. I think a month or so after you are off you will really
feel much better. I had a friend that had major surgery on his neck/spin
and he was on Oxycotons and he was hooked. He de-toxed in my home and so
on. I don't want to tell how this story ended up, unless you really want to
hear the whole thing. I will just say this....he was made to stop taking
the drugs and he is now fine. He was on them much longer than you. It did
take him a few months get used to feeling his body, but I suspect it will be
much shorter for you due to your differences. Don't let this go on any
longer. Feel some pain for now and your body will adjust to it and mask
what it needs to. It is amazing how it works.

As far as you going on LC. It depends on you. If you don't feel you can
handle both right now, don't. Get off the meds!! That is the most
important thing. I really mean this. I have done lots of studying on this
and how it effects you and so on due to my friends. You need to stop. Get
the calendar out and set a start date for the diet and stick with it. Try
not to gain while you are getting off the meds, but make sure you get off
them first and diet is second.

You can see how important I think this is. I unfortunately had a few
friends go through a lot of this [censored] and I hate to see it happen to anyone.
Be thankful it is just Percocet and not something a little stronger. I
requested Percocet for myself when I got out of surgery, but know it can be
    addictive.

If you want I can discuss this via e-mail with you. Let me know.

  3. oh yeah, you asked about me making sausage. I do make different types of
breakfast sausage. I am out right now, due to me not finding pork butt on
sale anywhere. Thanks for the recipes. I haven't made them yet, but this
winter will be sausage making time.

    Thanks,

  4. Curt - Thanks for taking the time to respond in such depth. Tommorow's the
day I see the doc. You seem to be very passionate about this and you've
given me a lot to think about. I have tried to stop the meds cold turkey and
I was miserable. I felt like I wanted to die. Food and diet were the
farthest thing from my mind. Now that I'm trying to get my life back to
normal, I know that you're right. I just hate to keep putting off the weight
loss. I'll email you and let you know what's happen's tommorow. I could use

Bear, I really don't have any insight to offer, but I wanted you to know
that *I* know you can do this! I agree with Curt, getting off the meds is
the biggest thing. I was lucky that my spinal injury wasn't touched by pain
meds, I think-it is SO easy to get hooked. The diet needs to happen, but
don't make yourself crazy over it-one cross at a time is plenty, don't you
think? Try to stock up on low carb yummies that you like, I'd say, but
    don't obsess over it.

At any rate, I am here if you need someone to talk to, vent to, whatever-my
email in my sig is valid.

I just didn't realize what a problem this was going to be. I've decided to

    I wish you the best.

My suggestion is that IF you decide to reduce both the carbs and the
medicine all at the same time..... be prepared for having bitten off
more than you or anyone can chew.

In other words, if the quitting everything fails, don't take it as a
personal failure which cuts your respect for yourself.

You are probably better off to take one giant step at a time and get the
    meds off your back.

Then, flush with success, you can take on the carbs knowing that you can
succeed at getting rid of monkeys on your back.

I'm going to do that - pretty much. Rather than re-starting induction I'm
going to cut back on the carbs, lurk on the NG and get off the meds. The

Bear, please don't feel stupid! There's NO reason to.

Write me any ole time, I'm on a lot since I have a small business that
requires me to spend a lot of time at the computer. I don't think my
surgery is likely comperable, but I'm sure happy to commiserate<GGG> Mine
was only one disk, C-5 C-6. Did you have more than one fused? I think
you're taking the right tactic as far as low carb, take it easy on yourself
and just start cutting out the [censored]. I ate whatever my body wanted after my
fusion, oddly enough Jello was the biggie<LOL> NO idea why, but that's
what I wanted, so that's what I ate. I also craved cereal. At any rate,
watch out for the junk, but otherwise, give your body what it's asking for
    while you heal.

    You can do this!

    Hugs
