Insect bite that draw blood

Probably Haematopota (clegs) as you said. Female of the species.

Thanks Norman, I just havent come across the female cleg before. They seem
worse than the male 😉

I don't what they are, but I have loads of bites from the same things from
last weekend on Dartmoor. The quantity of blood actually made me nervous
for a bit. They obviously inject an anticoagulant when giving you a nip.
Big too weren't they.

Liberal use of vinegar on the bit kills the itch for a while (hours not
minutes).
