Inner tube shortage

It's the first I've heard, but there's been a lot of that in other
industries lately. Maybe I'll stock up on my favorite tube...

Not a good idea here in Smogville -- the damn things rot in the package
if they're too old. We found this out when we had to buy a new tube for
the van out in the sticks. Split right down the crease within 5 miles.
Not a good day.

The bike shops in my area are all short of tubes. I asked at one today and
they just said they were having a lot of trouble getting any this summer,
but didn't say why.

The bike shops in my area are all short of tubes. I asked at one today and
they just said they were having a lot of trouble getting any this summer,
but didn't say why.

My guess is they just forgot to order them, and are piggybacking on
the "Chinese are using up all the gas / steel" rumor mill. There
doesn't seem to be any shortages at QBP (and they can ALL order from
QBP) - plenty of Michelin, Ritchey, Panaracer, Quality and Salsa tubes
in stock - only a couple SKUs out of stock at all.

Well, that suggests another good use for my Foodsaver. (Vacuum sealing
system often advertised on TV.)

On GITAP and GRABAAWR I had three total tube failures - no punctures. A
failed valve-stem 'patch', a failed seam and a random hole, not on either
the inner or outer surface. Cheng shin's, IIRC

As long as patches are not in short supply, who cares? You can do what
I do. Go out on roads that cyclists use and pick up the discarded tubes.
I then take them home and when I get about 6, I patch them all at once.
I then have plenty of tubes.

Anyway, if anybody gets really stuck, I've got about 100 26" MTB tubes left

When I had my bike recycling program going, Royce Union Bicycles used to
invite me to their warehouse a few times a year to pick through their
garbage and take what I needed. You wouldn't believe what they tossed. I
would rent a 24 or 26 foot truck each time, fill the thing to the brim, and
STILL leave behind what seemed like acres of brand new frames, saddles,
tires, and all kinds of parts -- including (literally) thousands of tire
tubes. All this stuff was new, but they just had no room to store it all.
And Royce Union was just one of many bicycle companies. I can't imagine
what a much larger company like Huffy, or even some of the higher-end
players discard every week. That said, it's really goofy that there could
EVER be a tire tube shortage!

Tubes might be OK, but I wouldn't dumpster-dive at a bike shop for tires.
Very rarely do my customers replace tires until they're shot, and sometimes
it's not obvious what the problem might be (until you're out on the road and
the casing ruptures when you're descending).

That's because you're a nice guy and convince them out of replacing
good tires. I get the feeling that lots of people replace tires on a
whim or because of miseducation, and sometimes even because of a
good salesman. I know for sure of one rider on a recent group ride
who was going to replace her tires on a whim; I didn't pipe up
because I believe that if that makes her happy, then there's nothing
wrong with it. What I should do is ask for her old tires...

Yes, we do have some customers who insist on replacing their tires before
they need to, but I always make it a point to tell them not to toss them,
but keep them around as spares in case they slice & dice one up on a ride.
If they still want them tossed, I'll put them in the donation box for Trips
for Kids.
